Watch the PDX People Customer Service Awards Live Tomorrow, April 26
To recognize airport employees who truly stand out as extraordinary, we'll hold the next PDX People Customer Service Awards tomorrow – Tuesday, April 26 – from noon to 1 p.m.
At the event, we'll take a look at air service development and passenger demographics, two closely intertwined topics. Tim Quayle, the Port of Portland's director of research, and Rick Aizawa, the Port's air service development manager, will lead a thoughtful panel discussion that explores recent survey data about who our passengers are and how they've changed during the pandemic. You’ll also learn what markets PDX currently serves, which ones the air service development team is looking at for the future, and when we expect some of our international markets to return. To watch, head to the PDX Facebook page tomorrow at noon.
Missed the last virtual awards ceremony? View the event recording or read about past winners on the PDX People website. You can also nominate an employee who embodies the PDX People values and serves as a shining example of great customer service for next quarter – submit a nomination now.

What's New with PDX Next:
Noise Updates, Ticket Lobby Scaffolding and April Forum
Noise Update: Last week, we noted that there might be an increase in volume this week. The dates shifted, so you can now expect another week or two of moderate noise in central areas. Another change is that demo work will now include Saturdays between the hours of 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., as well as occasional night work.
Elevator casing driving on the deplaning level near bag make up areas 7, 8 and 9 will cause some noise and vibrations on both enplaning and deplaning levels. This work starts today and should last about two weeks.
Ticket Lobby: The second rolling scaffolding goes up in the ticket lobby tonight, near the Southwest Airlines ticket counter. This structure allows crews to work safely overhead and reduces the number of scissor lifts in the area. The scaffolding is called "rolling" because it will move around the ticket lobby as work progresses. The structures will remain up through the summer.
April Forum: Want the inside scoop on construction at PDX? Jen Reynolds with the Port of Portland along with Pat Bifone and Caitlin Powell of Hoffman-Skanska will share the latest construction updates and answer your questions about PDX Next in just 30 minutes. The next update is set for Tuesday, April 26, at 10:30 a.m.
Looking for more PDX Next information? We're keeping you in the know on what's new on the PDX People website. Have questions or suggestions about construction? Email hello@pdxnext.com or call the construction hotline at 503.460.4339.
Mask Requirement Ends on Airport Property
Last week, a federal judge in Florida struck down the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mask requirement on airplanes, trains, buses and other public transportation. Based on this ruling, the Transportation Security Administration has withdrawn the mask requirement. This means that you no longer need to wear a face covering at PDX, on airport property or in airport shuttles. If you encounter a traveler with questions, please direct them to our Travel Safe website. We recognize that some of you might have mixed feelings about this sudden change and ask that everyone be kind and respectful of a person’s individual decision to wear a mask. We also acknowledge that coronavirus cases are on the rise once again, and that wearing masks, keeping physical distance and getting vaccinated are still important tools to stay healthy.
President Joe Biden Visits Portland and PDX
It’s not entirely unusual to see Air Force 1 land at PDX. But it’s a rare occasion when that President gets a tour of the centerpiece of our airport's new main terminal, a nine-acre intricate wood lattice roof sourced from sustainable Northwest forests. From video of the plane’s arrival to President Biden’s full remarks from the Oregon National Guard hangar (head to 41:15 and 47:00 for airport-specific comments), we’re thankful to everyone who worked hard to keep special guests safe, minimize disruption and make this unique visit a success.
Volunteer Appreciation: Music Program
Did you know that PDX is home to four volunteer programs? This month, we'll highlight each of these areas in honor of National Volunteer Week, celebrated April 17-23.
The PDX music program was founded in 2002 in the wake of 9/11, with the intent to use music as a way to create a calming atmosphere for passengers. Today, the program provides an opportunity for talented musicians who wish to volunteer their time and share their talents with thousands of people. The 20 musicians involved in the program play a variety of instruments, including piano, guitar, ukulele, pan flute, marimba and accordion. Travelers can hear more than 80 hours of live music each week, across four different locations at the airport.
PDX Awarded for its Accessibility for All Ages
The 2022 Ageless Awards featured a new honor – the Age-Friendly Business Award – and PDX was the very first recipient. Check out KOIN AM Extra's segment on the recognition, which celebrates local businesses and organizations committed to creating a space for people of all ages. Port of Portland Chief Operating Office Dan Pippenger talked with the show’s hosts about how we prioritized creating an airport that’s accessible to everyone. You can also watch the event recording to see Chris Czarnecki, Port of Portland's Director of PDX Business and Properties, accept the award on behalf of the airport – head to 1:18:50 for a short video and his remarks.
