Mongan Reflections from the Director: Does "In-Person" Matter?
| |
By any objective measure, remote and hybrid work at the Mongan Institute has been an unequivocal success. This past year Mongan faculty (as principal investigators) broke all prior records for productivity as we collectively accounted for over $108 million in grants and a success rate in achieving funding with each application well eclipsing the national average and bettering the mean success rate across MGH. We are publishing more articles than ever, exceeding 1600 peer-reviewed articles over the past 12 months. Despite the pandemic, “team science” projects have been spawned crossing different centers with new collaborations. Mongan Faculty continue to be recognized for excellence in science and for distinction in one of our most important priorities of mentoring early career investigators: Vicki Fung and Kim Blumenthal recently received the Harvard Medical School Young Mentor Award and Ken Freedberg’s receipt this month of the Stephen Calderwood Award for Excellence in Mentoring is highlighted in this month’s update. Finally, many engaged in hybrid work describe the benefits of spending less time commuting, experiencing less stress in dealing with dropping off and picking up children from daycare, and greater flexibility in getting needed exercise and engaging in activities promoting self-care.
And yet, despite the many benefits of remote work, many of us have also remarked that something has been lost in the vitality, rhythm, culture (and fun) experienced in our daily work when we largely relate to each other in flat screen meetings (often while multi-tasking). What has been compromised is difficult to quantify, but becomes clear in what might best be described as the “Aha” moments that occur with in-person encounters that promote creativity, idea exchange, community, and fellowship. For me this recently occurred in the Bulfinch Tent at MGH during the Center for Diversity and Inclusion Welcome and Award Celebration featuring extraordinary work by award winners coupled with networking among junior faculty, including many from Mongan. This moment also occurred at a celebration of the MGH Center for Gun Violence Prevention including a presentation by Mongan’s Chana Sacks highlighting an innovative collaboration with undergraduate students at Emerson College and the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute to create a film aimed at changing the narrative on gun violence in America. Closer to home at our 100 Cambridge Street office, this “Aha” moment was felt by many of us attending a day-long research meeting by the Health Decision Science Center led by Mongan’s Karen Sepucha that filled our 16th floor conference rooms with researchers and clinical leaders from across the country including team building exercises, panel presentations, updates on research, discussions of data, and strategic planning.
A recent New York Times article titled, “Forget the Coffee. What Matters Is if Workers Feel Returning Is Worth It”, ended with the following quote that perhaps sums up what many of us have been feeling: “I want to take the next step, not just sit behind a screen for the rest of my career”. While our work life has likely been forever altered by the opportunity and benefits of hybrid work, I am convinced more than ever that we need to intentionally create and support in-person experiences supporting spontaneous encounters, idea generation, collaborative brainstorming, social exchanges that matter, and community. All ideas and suggestions welcome!
