This month, Canopy Center joined Project RESPECT, Domestic Abuse Intervention Services, (DAIS), WCASA, End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin and other local non-profits to amplify the voice of victim service organizations by participating in discussions aimed at securing much-needed funding to offset the forecasted $700 million Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) shortfall. We talked about the reduction to VOCA funding and what it means for Canopy Center in last monthās newsletter - linked here, if you missed it!Ā
Attorney General Kaul invited Meaghan to speak at a news conference in support of a bi-partisan coalition of 42 attorney generals urging Congress to authorize 2024 bridge funding for the Crime Victims Fund (which funds VOCA). Watch it here! You can also read Attorney General Kaulās letter here.Ā
āThe ramifications of this funding gap could be dire, threatening the continuity of victim service programs nationwide.ā - Attorney General KaulĀ
Meaghan also had the opportunity to join Canopy Center Board Member and WMTV15 News Anchor Leigh Mills on the 4p.m. news to talk about what it means for Canopy Centerās Oasis sexual abuse treatment program to be considered a mental health clinic. We announced this certification in last monthās newsletter! Leigh also used this conversation as an opportunity to bolster support for Attorney General Kaulās letter to Congress and promote Stand Up & Sing for Kids - which aims to raise awareness and support for Canopy Centerās programs. More on this, too - keep scrolling!Ā
We couldnāt wrap this story without mentioning that Meaghan was also appointed to the Governorās Juvenile Justice Commission. This appointment not only honors her dedication but also provides a significant platform to influence policies and initiatives that support juvenile justice and the broader objectives of victim services. Congratulate Meaghan, here!Ā

Weāre excited (well, we will be when weāre done moving furniture and cleaning up š) to be making some important updates to our space! Canopy Center will be under construction in the coming weeks as we:Ā
|
- Add doors to the lobby to reduce distractions for children coming into the space for therapy and support an intentional transition into treatment
- Remodel the Parent to Child Supervised Visitation Suite to accommodate two families simultaneously, re-route ductwork to prevent sound carrying between the spaces and add sound proofing elements to give families the privacy and respect they deserveĀ
- Reimagine the Oasis Mental Health Clinic treatment spaces and create three treatment rooms to better suit individual and small group therapy needsĀ
