BREAST workshop success at RANZCR!

After a 3-year hiatus, the BREAST team were finally able to run an in-person workshop at the RANZCR AGM in Adelaide a few weeks ago.

At this workshop, we released our newest test set 'ACT', an extended 2D test set that contains a 100 cases instead of 60 like our other 2D test sets.

We had a great turn out, with a total of 46 readers including 37 radiologists and 9 radiology trainees participating at the workshop, with 8 readers completing multiple test sets!

Our Director, Prof Sarah Lewis, also gave a wonderful presentation on some of our recent research work, titled 'Radiologists’ performances in Digital Mammography and Digital Breast Tomosynthesis using a self-assessment test set: a decade overview'.

It was wonderful to meet many in-person and we will be back next year for RANZCR ASM in Brisbane 2023.

What's next for BREAST?

Our next planned event is a DBT webinar happening in Februrary 2023, please see below for more details. We are also heading back to Adelaide in March 2023 for another in-person workshop for the 13th General Breast Imaging Meeting. Stay tuned for details.

BREAST next event: DBT online webinar

When: February 28th 2023, 5-7pm AEST.

Cost: FREE for all readers

We would like to welcome special guest, senior specialist Dr Garvin Williamsz, on presenting this 2-hour virtual webinar. Garvin will spend the first half of the webinar going through Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) features and his experienced knowledge on reading them and the second half will be focussed on providing a step-by-step guide through a BREAST DBT test set.

Success in securing extra funding for BREAST to run an in-person workshop in Vietnam!

Our very own BREAST research fellow, Dr Yun Trieu, has been successful in securing further funding on the current VIETRAD project for the BREAST team to host an in-person workshop in Vietnam in 2023!

In conjunction with our current funders, Aus4innovation, Yun was successful in her application for additional funds towards our Vietnam workshop from The Sydney-Vietnam Institute and Southeast Asia Centre. Congratulations!!

Additionally, Yun recently attended the Australia-Vietnam Education, Policy and Economic Investment Forum in Melbourne on December 2nd and had the opportunity to meet the Vietnamese delegation led by Prof. Vuong Dinh Hue, the President of the Vietnam National Assembly, alongside more than 20 University representitives from Vietnam. This event was organised by the Australian and Vietnamese Governments. Below are some pictures from the event.

BREAST represented in Korea at AOCR and KCR 2022

Our exceptionally hard-working research fellow, Dr Yun Trieu, also travelled to Korea to present BREAST work at the 20th Asian Oceanian Congress of Radiology in conjunction with the 78th Annual Meeting of the Korean Society of Radiology in September.

Her oral presentation was titled 'Diagnostic performances in screening mammograms of radiologists from countries with different popularity of low and high dense breasts.'

BREAST team is off to present at SPIE in early 2023

We have had more success in having not one, not two, but SIX BREAST-related research abstracts accepted into next year's SPIE Medical Imaging conference being held in February in San Deigo, California, USA. Opportunity to volunteer for a BREAST study

Our research is always about conducting studies that aim to improve breast screening capabilities and experience. If you are in Sydney and are interested to give up a couple hours of your time, please get in contact with us via email as are looking for volunteers for two upcoming studies running February to April 2023.

Study 1:

Compare the display of mammograms on a super high-resolution monitor with a diagnostic monitor. The findings will indication a cost-effective way for clinicians to establish a portable mammogram reading workstations for an online delivery of high-quality training and education.

Study 2:

Explore the effectiveness of individualised training test sets when applying intelligent algorithm support to readers who interpret screening mammograms. The AI will harness the weaknesses and strengths of individual readers and assign the readers to targeted training cases to enhance the diagnositc efficacy in breast cancer detection.
