Major Considerations
Are any of these true for you?
  • You’re finding that your major might not be for you
  • You’re an undeclared student who found something you’re passionate about and would like to major in
  • You’re considering double majoring or adding a minor
  • You have a class you are concerned about and wonder if you should stay in it
If you have a class you are concerned about, come to the Shepard Academic Resource Center to find out about your options. We will help you understand the nuances of school, grades, and GPA requirements.
You can change your major at most points in your time at the University of Portland.  If you’re just starting to think about what might be a good fit for you, you could first talk to the Career Center in Orrico Hall. Not only do they have surveys to help you explore potential careers complementary to your interests and skills, the staff is there to help you with everything from deciding on a major to finding an internship or career. If you have a major/minor in mind and want to discuss what that might look like over the next few years, you can stop by the SARC in BC 101 to create a 4-year plan.
Once you have selected an academic major, fill out the online form to complete the process. For more information, or to fill out a form, visit the Registrar’s website at up.edu/registrar
The professional schools (Engineering, Business, Education, and Nursing) have special requirements for gaining acceptance, so you’ll need to speak with the program coordinator in these schools prior to requesting a major change. You can make an appointment with the program coordinators by contacting that particular school office:

Tutoring Help
It has finally happened.  Procrastination has caught up with you. Your French test was a disaster; a night of cramming left you muttering incomprehensible French terms, but all you know is “je ne sais pas”.
You glance at the test results.  Oops! From even just one test, your professor will send an academic warning if he or she thinks you are in danger of failing the course.  To prevent all this from happening, resources are available.  Tutoring is available from trained peers in the Learning Commons in Buckley Center 163.
Other Tips for Improving Your Study Skills:
Take the Inventory of College Level Study Skills quiz. It will help you gain a better understanding of yourself as a learner, and identify the study skills that need refining.
Remember, studying requires more effort than high school days. Plan on spending two to three hours of studying for every hour of actual class.
The mind can retain more information for a longer time when study sessions are spaced out, occur more frequently, and are shorter.  It takes a little more time, but the effort and the sleep you get the night before the test will be worth it.
If you need help managing your time, come into the Shepard Academic Resource Center where we can help you get a better handle on things.
Executive Function Skills Group
Do you have a diagnosis of ADHD?  Interested in meeting others with ADHD to share study strategies and practice time management in a supportive atmosphere, on a weekly basis?  It’s not too late to join the Executive Function Skills Group!  To join, you’ll need to schedule a “group intake” appointment with Melanie Gangle, AES Program Manager, by calling or visiting the BC 163 front desk at 503-943-8002. Questions or want more information? Email Melanie at gangle@up.edu.
Do You Have a Hold on Your Account?
A HOLD is a restriction put on a student’s account. Depending on the type of hold you have on your account, you may not be able to:
  • Register for fall classes
  • View your mid-term or final grades
  • Request a transcript if you are considering transferring to another university
With registration coming up in a few months, it’s important to check your account early to take care of any holds you might have.
To see if there’s a hold on your account, please follow these instructions:
  1. Login to the UP Portal at pilots.up.edu
  2. Click on Self-Serve (the SSB icon under the tab Quick Access)
  3. Click on the Student tab
  4. Click on the link Student Records
  5. Click View Holds
If you have questions about a hold on your account, please contact the appropriate department based on what type of hold you have. The chart below gives descriptions and contact information for hold

Did You Know...
  • If you are tired, even after getting enough sleep, you may be low in iron?  Try taking a multi-vitamin or eating more red meat and leafy green vegetables.
  • You can check your AP/IB scores in your Degree Works by logging on to the Pilots UP page. If the scores aren’t listed there, check with your school’s program counselor to see if the scores are still being processed or were not received.
  • Playing games and checking e-mail on your computer or cell phone is considered to be disruptive to professors? Save these things for after class.
  • You should check with your professor to make sure that it is okay you eat in class?  Some prefer that you don’t.
  • The libary has created new tutorials available in the Virtual Learning Center for guidance on MLA Citation Style, APA Citation Style, and Academic Integrity: Avoiding Plagiarism. Follow the links and sign in using your UP username and password to get started!
