What a Submission Season!
|
|
|
It's June at NAMT and that means we've fully wrapped an entire year of submissions for The 36th Annual Festival of New Musicals, The Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge for High School Students and the latest cycle of the Frank Young Fund for New Musicals Production, Project Development & Writers Residency Grants!
Hello to our new readers! We hope you'll find the resources and information below helpful as a creator of new musicals, whether as a writer, producer, director, musician or any other person in the room.
You are now part of a massive network. For the first time ever, over 1,000 writers submitted to the Festival in a single year. Our Festival Committee grew as well, so much so that we outgrew our conference room hosting our in-person selection meeting in NYC! I sure hope that's a sign of what's to come at the Festival this October! 139 student songwriters covering 34 states also entered the chat this year for the new-at-NAMT Songwriting Challenge, and I'm thrilled to tell you that we'll announce the submissions opening date for next year's Challenge at our upcoming concert celebrating this year's winners. Not to mention, we're adding to our pool of Grantee Artists & Organizations all the time and doubling down on the potential connections between writers and the nearly 200 Organizational & Independent Producers of the NAMT Membership and their staffs including Marketing teams, Development teams, Production crew, Managers and Creatives.
You're in the right spot, so stick with us. With the numbers above, of course it's easy to feel like the competition is overwhelming and the opportunities are few. But, it's your sense of drive and passion that has brought you to this hub of likeminded artists and producers. So, I encourage you to keep following that instinct -- you're doing the right thing! Take advantage of the info in here and attend an online or in-person NAMT event, reach out to each other, and seek out the upcoming submissions below or implement other ideas you read here to bring impact, attention and resources to the work you create.
Happy Summer,

YOUR INFLUENCES ARE SHOWING: What's a song that had a big influence on your writing?
"Hell" - I love almost anything that has a deep New Orleans Second Line groove and this track was my gateway drug into it. In "Lickety-Split"—a song I wrote with Diana DeGarmo and the very next song on the playlist—it's pretty clear that I haven't strayed too far from my influences!
5,6,7,8... AGAIN: Which song gets a replay every single time?
"Your Best American Girl" - I remember finding this song on a long bus trip a few years ago. I proceeded to listen to it over and over for the rest of the ride and haven't really stopped since. Something about it hits the exact right spot for me—it's emotional, explosive, and catchy as hell.
CURTAIN CALL: Give a shout out to the song that closes your playlist. Why does this track get the final bow?
"Another Winter in a Summer Town" - Right off the coast of Rhode Island—just a dot in the Atlantic—sits the tiny community of Block Island. My family and I are lucky to spend a week there almost every year, and each year as we climb aboard the ferry back to the mainland, I fire up this song and pass my wife one of my ear buds. It's a masterpiece that is the perfect example of showing not telling, and it beautifully captures the feeling of the end of a season, a project, a journey.
