On Monday, rules for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that we put into place by the Federal Communications Commission under the Obama Administration in 2015 were rolled back. There has been much discussion in the media as to what this reversal does and does not do. Prior to 2015, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulated Internet Service Providers and levied fines on ISPs who were found to be engaged in anti-competitive practices. In 2015, the FCC created a rule and grabbed the power from the FTC to levy fines. And Monday's reversal of that power grab has the same effect on ISPs - they've always been monitored for anti-competitive and unfair or deceptive practices. The FTC is the nation's premier consumer protection agency, and Monday the FCC simply gave the power back to the FTC that had been taken from it in 2015. Rest assured that Hartelco does not throttle speeds to selective sites nor engage in any illegal anti-competitive or deceptive practices. All customers are protected from these illegal activities.

When to Reboot Your Router and When to Replace it It may seem simple but one of the easiest ways to fix a wide variety of technical issues is to simply reboot (or restart) the device, including your router. This is because routers are like small computers that use memory, a processor, and an operating system. And like your desktop or laptop computer, routers also benefit from a fresh start every now and then. For example, if your internet service goes down at your home, the first thing to try is to reboot your wireless router. It's a quick process that will often take care of the problem: 1. Unplug your router from its power outlet (don't just turn it off). 2. Wait about a minute, then plug it back in. 3. Allow the device a minute or two to turn back on. If your Wi-Fi problems persist, it might be time for you to buy a new router. With the increasing number of internet-connected devices in homes today, "old school" router technology may not be up to the demands. That router you purchased many years ago may not be equipped for your home's current Wi-Fi network load. Another factor to consider is the speed of your internet service. Some older routers have a speed cap limiting the maximum internet speed possible, which means your outdated router may be preventing you from receiving the full speed of your internet plan. Hartelco carries routers in stock. Call us today for your upgrade! (Please note: Due to the Friday May 25th FBI Warning, a reboot of all routers is highly recommended. The FBI issued a formal warning that Russian computer hackers had compromised hundreds of thousands of home and office routers and could collect user information or shut down network traffic. To prevent this from affecting your home/business, please reboot all routers. Click here to read more.)
