Student Baya Burgess attended the Mountain Workshop, a photojournalism workshop hosted by Western Kentucky University in October. Along with photographers from around the world, Burgess photographed small-town life while being coached by award-winning photographers and editors. Visit her story about a husband and wife dedicated to education in Williamsburg, the host city for the workshop.

Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon appeared on “According to the Record” with Kim Murphree on KLWN-FM on Tuesday morning to give a preview of her Budig lecture and discuss other topics. McLendon gave her Budig lecture “Soul of the Story: Writing in the Age of AI,” last week.
Assistant Professor Judy Watts recently published “Exposure to diverse ethnic-racial media: Black, Latinx, and White Parents’ attitudes toward media-based ethnic-racial socialization,” in Communication Research Reports. The project surveyed 367 Black, Latinx and White parents to assess their attitudes on using media with racially and/or ethnically diverse characters to help children learn about race/ethnic identity. This study was supported by the research cultivation grant from the National Communication Association. Read more.
Assistant Professor Sarah Cavanah was part of a team that published the study “High School Journalism Field Trips: Post-Pandemic Barriers and Opportunities.” The study examined high school journalism educators’ perspectives on field trips to attend workshops and conferences sponsored by college and university journalism programs. Assistant Professor Steve Bien-Aime and Associate Professor Alyssa Appelman co-authored a new academic study, “Who Wrote it? News Readers’ Sensemaking of AI/Human Bylines.” This exploratory mixed methods study analyzes readers’ sensemaking of artificial intelligence’s role in journalistic writing. In this study, participants were randomly assigned to a byline condition that varied the stated role of AI in a news story. Read more.
The JMC School hosted the Community-Engaged Scholarship on Misinformation last Friday. Associate Professor Alyssa Appelman, Professor of the Practice Patricia Gaston, Professor Hyunjin Seo and graduate students Macy Burkett and Olga Morales hosted the event along with University of Washington Professor Javin West, who is the founding director of the Center for an Informed Public.

On Wednesday, Nov. 20, the Dole Institute of Politics will host a discussion group event titled “The 2024 Post Election Conference: Kansas Panel,” which will feature the Kansas City Star’s lead political reporter, Jonathan Shorman. The event will cover the Kansas state and local elections from 2024, and further discuss how eastern Kansas has become a national battleground. Join us at the Dole Institute (2350 Petefish Dr.) at 4 p.m.

Alums available to meet with students: JMC alums Julie Kellogg Breithaupt and John Hanna will be available this week to meet students on campus. Kellogg Breithaupt, internal communications manager at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City, will be in the Stauffer-Flint lobby from 2:30-3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Hanna, Kansas correspondent and political writer for The Associated Press, will be outside room 2000 at the Dole Human Development Center from 12:15-12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20. The informal meet-and-greets are great opportunities for students to learn more about the alums’ careers.
