BOOK CLUB - Halloween Books
While trick-or-treating can be fun and exciting, it also can be scary and overwhelming for young children who are unfamiliar with it. To prepare your child for trick-or-treating, try making it more familiar to them so they know what to expect on Halloween night. An easy way to do this is by reading books about trick-or-treating. Some examples are below.
LITERACY AND NUMERACY - Patterns
Did you know that research by the University of Cambridge has found that a children’s ability to understand patterns can predict later mathematical achievement better than other abilities such as counting? To work on pattern recognition with your child, start out with a simple AB pattern sequence and then work your way up to more complicated patterns (ABC, ABB, ABBC). Once your child has mastered this task, you can ask them to create their own patterns, or you can even create a pattern with an error and ask them to identify it. Can your child continue the Halloween patterns pictured here?
ARTS & CRAFTS - Masking Tape Mummy
Materials Needed:
  • Black Paper
  • Scissors
  • Masking Tape
  • Googly Eyes
Directions:
  • To prepare this project for your child, you can cut out a mummy shape from black paper. You could also trace the shape and ask your child to cut it out.
  • Once the shape is cut, invite your child to cut masking tape and wrap their mummy up.
  • Once your child is done wrapping their mummy, attach googly eyes to the face.
DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONE - Listening
As a parent, one of the most frustrating things is when your child does not listen. Do you find yourself repeating things over and over or yelling constantly to get your child's attention? In many cases, this is normal behavior for a young child and it is aligned with their development. However, there are a few strategies that parents can use to help their child become a better listener that Fay's kindergarten teachers incorporate into their classrooms.

PARENTING ADVICE - Is your child overscheduled?
Conventional wisdom holds that today’s kids are overwhelmed by a hectic extracurricular routine composed of club sports, dance teams, and tutoring - and that all this “enrichment” is causing undue stress and anxiety. However, Vi-Anne Brown, Director of Counseling Services at Fay School, cautions against automatically accepting the maxim that being busy is bad. So, how can a parent tell the difference between a busy child and one that is verging on burnout? Vi-Anne shares four warning signs to determine whether a child needs to pare back their schedule.
