UP Parent Newsletter: June 2020
Dear Pilot Parents,
This coming Saturday marks the longest day of the year and beginning of summer. Whether you’re still hunkered down at home or returning to some sense of normalcy, I hope the summer months and sunshine brings your family blessings and hope for a brighter future.
More information regarding the fall semester will be available beginning Friday, June 19, and will continue to be shared throughout the summer. In the meantime, please check out the various updates and resources below.
P.S. We wish all of our Pilot dads a very Happy Father's Day over this coming weekend. We would love to hear how you’re celebrating!
Sincerely,
Katie Seccombe
Associate Director, Parent Engagement

Combatting Racism & Advocating for Justice

In light of recent events, UP’s President and Provosts shared in a statement on June 1 that “We decry institutional racism at every level; we commit to listening humbly to the voices of those who suffer individual and collective trauma; and we offer opportunities for all members of the campus community to reflect and seek solutions.”
Following the statement, Campus Ministry and the Moreau Center for Service & Justice hosted a prayer vigil, and the Office of International Education, Diversity, and Inclusion hosted a Community Town Hall. Most recently, on June 12, UP’s President and Provosts released a follow-up message delineating specific ongoing and new University initiatives to combat systemic racism. We encourage you to read the full statement.
Our office has been personally reflecting and having tough conversations around systemic racism. We will make mistakes along the way, but we want to proceed with an earnest effort to listen, learn, and act. As you have conversations with your student about these important topics, you may find these resources helpful.

Help Us Welcome the Class of 2024

Help us welcome the Class of 2024 and their loved ones into the Pilot family by submitting a photo of you and your student in purple Pilot gear to parents@up.edu. We encourage you to get creative and make a personal welcome sign to include in your photo. Some of you may even be featured on social media or in our communications with new families! If you know an incoming family, now is the perfect time to reach out, welcome them, and answer any questions that they may have about your experience.

Summer Checklist

While students take a break from classes this summer, they can use the time to not only prepare for a successful year ahead and plan for the future, but to also take a mental break and re-charge. Check out our "summer checklist” of things to consider and discuss with your student over the next few months.

Show Your Pilot Pride This Summer

Show your Pilot pride online, no matter where you are! Add a special “Proud to be a Pilot Parent” frame to your Facebook profile picture, use a GIF on your Instagram Story (search “University of Portland” for our Pilot Parent and other UP GIFs), or use UP’s campus photos as your Zoom digital background.

Survey Reminder

If you missed our Parent Communications Survey last month, we invite you to take a few minutes to complete it. To assist us in providing our UP families with the most helpful and relevant information, we would appreciate your feedback about this newsletter and other communications from Alumni & Parent Relations. Thank you to everyone who has already completed the survey!

What We're Reading

Summer is a great time for reflection and planning. Some students may be reflecting on their major or making an academic plan for the coming year. In “How Liberal Arts Can Help Your Student Get a Job,” CollegiateParent shares the importance of your student being authentically interested in their major and the valuable skills a liberal arts education can provide.
