Here's your news for January from on and off campus. What better way to celebrate winter than in the company of other Carls? The photos above show students, staff, and alumni at some of the season's many Winter Gatherings (and see below for more to come). Here on campus, it's the first day of a busy new term, and folks are already planning for the rest of the year as well —fifteen professors have received faculty development grants, and five current Carls will represent the USA at this summer's World U-24 Ultimate Championships. And speaking of gatherings, it's no secret that American druidry originated at Carleton in the '60s. Lofgren fellow named Congratulations to Devin Holewinski ’13, this year's recipient of the Lofgren Alumni Business Fellowship. Established in 1984 by Charles Lofgren Sr. ’27, the award supports alumni with established commitments to a career in business through educational opportunities.

New art at the Perlman
Opening on January 13, Only sounds that travel through us, by Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme, is this winter's exhibition at the Perlman Teaching Museum. It features three bodies of work that explore diverse traditions of communal song and dance across the Arab world. With moving-image installations, sound, performance, and poetry, the duo's artwork centers themes of collectivity, resilience, and memory. Convocation and lecture/demonstration with Kyle Abraham
A 2013 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, choreographer and dancer Kyle Abraham is this year's Ward Lucas Lecturer in the Arts at Carleton. His work has been performed by major dance companies, including the New York City Ballet, London’s Royal Ballet, and the American Ballet Theater. The New York Times has raved at his skill in “mingling the ballet vernacular with other forms, from hip-hop to West African movement” and in “finding the person within the dancer and the bodies within a body.”

Virtual: Monday, January 13 11 a.m. CST Carleton Connects: Dan Hernández and regenerative agriculture
Can we really produce food in a way that is good for the environment? Carleton biology professor Dan Hernández studies regenerative agriculture and its goal of restoring soil quality through management practices based on ecological principles. He will discuss his new USDA-funded Climate Smart Commodities research collaboration with local farmers, which aims to understand how regenerative poultry-centered agroforestry affects soil health and carbon sequestration.

Join Lindsay Brandt ’17 for a behind-the-scenes look at Glacier National Park’s distance learning programs. Lindsay will discuss why she loves distance learning, how interactive virtual experiences with parks like Glacier can help connect kids to the outdoors wherever they are, and how her experiences at Carleton have shaped her approach to rangering.
