Mongan Reflections from the Director:DSC & COVID-Corps Program Highlight
| |
In keeping with the 2022 theme highlighting our centers and programs at the Mongan Institute, this February Reflections shines a spotlight on the Disparities Solutions Center. The Disparities Solutions Center (DSC) is the first disparities action-oriented center with a focus of moving the issue of disparities in healthcare beyond research into the arenas of policy and practice. Founded in 2005, the Center serves as a national, regional, and local resource, dedicated to the development and implementation of strategies that advance policy and practice to improve quality, eliminate racial and ethnic disparities, and achieve equity in health care. Under the leadership of the Director, Aswita Tan-McGrory, MBA, MSPH, one of the DSC signature initiatives is the Disparities Leadership program, a year-long, hands-on, national executive education program focused on helping health care leaders to advance equity and eliminate health disparities. Since 2008, this extraordinary program has trained over 500 leaders across the nation from over 225 organizations across the United States, Washington DC, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Switzerland. The DSC maintains an active alumni network and itinerary of projects undertaken by participants. In addition, the Disparities Leadership Program, the DSC leads the equity in access to and delivery of clinical care for Mass General as well as the Annual Report on Equity in Healthcare Quality. For more on the Disparities Leadership Program and other outstanding initiatives by the Disparities Solutions Center aimed at making a difference, click here. More recently, in 2020, the DSC launched an innovative program aimed at providing opportunities for mentored experience in biomedical research for diverse undergraduate and graduate students, co-sponsored by the Mongan Institute and the Department of Medicine. The MGH COVID Corps Research Internship Program was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic when many conventional internships were cancelled. The COVID Corps program provides a summer opportunity to conduct COVID-related research, specifically targeting historically underrepresented students in the biomedical research sciences. With thought-leading experts and mentors from the Mongan Institute and across MGH in areas such as epidemiology, population health, health care delivery research, computational biology, immunology, and other major research areas, the COVID Corps scholars have the unique opportunity to learn, grow, and expand their network as official members of the nation’s top hospital-based research program. In this month’s update, you will find a call for the third cohort of COVID-Corps scholars and mentors, as this innovative program continues to advance developing diverse future scientists. Under the close guidance of a carefully selected primary faculty lead mentor, MGH COVID Corps Scholars will benefit from participating in an exciting program of training, while actively contributing to COVID-related research projects to advance novel prevention and therapeutic strategies. More information on the COVID-corps Biomedical Research Internship program and the application process can be found on our website here. Please consider identifying potential candidates and contributing as a sponsor and faculty member in this outstanding program. - Steve Bartels, MD, MS
