The Rake's Progress
Scheidt Family Performing Arts Center
Hosted by Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music + Opera Memphis
An English opera full of temptation, deceit and love lost. The Devil finds work for the idlest of hands in Igor Stravinsky's neoclassical opera The Rake's Progress. This 1951 masterpiece uses the glorious words of British-American poet W. H. Auden to tell the story of Tom Rakewell, a young man who inherits a fortune and abandons his hometown sweetheart, Anne Trulove, for the big-city pleasures of life in London. Obsessed with the idea that he is destined for greatness and cheered on by his diabolical companion, Nick Shadow, Tom trades his soul in exchange for fame and influence. An eternity of torment waits for him…unless true love can somehow find a way? Combining a fantastical plot in the vein of Faust, Damn Yankees, Rosemary's Baby, or Ghost Rider with the satirical genius of British artist William Hogarth, the opera creates something entirely new and uniquely thrilling. The co-production between the University of Memphis and Opera Memphis showcases young, emerging talent and established international artists alongside the University of Memphis Symphony Orchestra, music director Stephen Karr (Glimmerglass Festival, Anchorage Opera), and guest stage director Ned Canty (Opera Memphis, Santa Fe Opera). University of Memphis students, faculty and staff can pick up two complimentary tickets to the November production of the Rake’s Progress – a partnership with Opera Memphis. November 22 at 7:30 PM November 24 at 3 PM Pick up your two FREE tickets at Scheidt Family Performing Arts Center, Room 2117A - Admin Suite on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 AM-4PM. UofM ID required. In Partnership with Opera Memphis.
