Celebrating Extraordinary PDX People
PDX People make extraordinary service part of their daily routine. To show our appreciation for these efforts, we dedicate a week to celebrating and uplifting what makes PDX one of America's Best Airports: YOU!
The week started with a series of celebrations and closed with the annual PDX Excellence in Service Awards, which honors customer service Superstars from each of our partners – airlines, concessions, transportation and more – all nominated by their teams. This year's theme, Homegrown Superstars, paid homage to the employees who grow with us and make our airport better by rooting their customer service in the PDX People values: Being friendly, knowledgeable and respectful.
From roadway to runway and concourse to construction, your hard work and commitment to upholding our values are appreciated. Thank you, PDX People! Want more? Read the full article and view photos from the events.
Want to recognize someone? You can nominate an employee who embodies the PDX People values and serves as a shining example of great customer service for next quarterly awards – submit a nomination now

What's New with PDX Next: Roof Impacts, Crane Picks, Ticket Lobby ATM, Baggage Claim and Concessions Updates
Roof Impacts: While we continue to move roof modules into place, there are some anticipated impacts. On Oct. 3 – 5, the Concourse C pet relief area and restrooms by Gate C9 will close from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. On Thursday, Oct. 6, and Friday, Oct. 7, the pre-security restroom by the B/C checkpoint will close. Keep in mind, roof work is very dynamic, and these dates could change.
Crane Picks: There are four upcoming crane picks. When cranes move equipment to the roof, areas below are blocked off for safety. The first pick is on Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. This will impact the north ticket lobby and baggage claim, closing the north elevator banks and carousels 9 and 10. Passengers accessing baggage service offices on the north end of baggage claim will be re-routed outside, down the sidewalk and back into the building. Spotters on both levels will redirect travelers around the construction.
The second crane pick is on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. and impacts the south side. It will close carousels 2 and 3, re-route passengers accessing the south baggage services offices and close the restrooms in south bag claim.
Ticket Lobby ATM: On Friday, Oct. 7, the ATM in the ticket lobby moves slightly, shifting a little bit south and around the corner.
Baggage Claim: Starting today, you'll see some temporary walls going up in north baggage claim near carousels 8 and 9. These will be temporary alternate baggage office spaces, for use starting early next year. Also, carousels 5 and 6 will close from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5, and Thursday, Oct. 6.
Concessions Updates: The Peet's Coffee location in baggage claim re-opened this week. Operating hours are 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Starting today, AtYourGate is not operating at PDX; we'll keep your posted on their status.

Meet the Y Columns Holding Up Our Roof
From July to mid-August, PDX's construction partners installed 26 Y columns around the site of the new main terminal. Another eight will be erected next year. These 34 columns, set in a 100-foot-by-100-foot grid, will soon hold up the new terminal's nine-acre wooden roof.
Each of these steel columns weighs between 80,000 and 90,000 pounds – and that’s before we filled them with solid concrete. If you think that's heavy, wrap your brain around how much weight they'll hold – 18 million pounds in total, or an average of 264 tons per column. Learn more about the columns and get a feel for just how tall they really are.

PDX Lactation Rooms
Helping travelers at PDX means staying on top of updates and changes to the terminal.
Did you know that each of the airport’s four concourses now has a private lactation room with a comfortable chair, changing table, outlets for breast milk pumps and a sink?  All four rooms are wheelchair accessible as well.
You can search the online map of PDX for “lactation rooms” to find their locations or look for the new signs with an icon of a parent and a baby. Nursing parents will soon have even more options: When the new main terminal opens in 2024, it will add five more lactation rooms to the airport, three of which will be pre-security.
Honoring National Disability Employment Awareness Month
The purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities. Since 1962, the movement has dropped the word “physically” from its title to include individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week and christened the month of October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month. However, there continue to be barriers to employment for people with disabilities and, across all age groups, persons with disabilities were much less likely to be employed than those with no disabilities. Our PDX People values include creating a working environment that's inclusive and welcoming, so we hope you'll take some time to read up on accessibility in the workplace and respectful service at PDX
PDX in Pictures
A T-Rex family invaded PDX just in time to eat um, we mean greet – the arriving Amsterdam flight. This rare, one-of-a-kind sighting was captured by Brian Burk with the Port of Portland...who somehow lived to tell the tale! If you have a photo of life around PDX, email it to PDX People Communications and we might use it in a future PDX in Pictures.
