News That Rocks
The School of Rock Silver Spring House Band on the Fountain Stage for Sounds of The Season in Downtown Silver Spring
Happy New Year!
2023 is Going to ROCK!

Fall Season Rehearsals Are On Point!

Our Fall Performance Program is progressing quite nicely. In December we were working hard and having a lot of fun with holiday potlucks and gift exchanges. Many thanks to the Performance Program parents who provided all the savory and sweet things that made for such a special last night of rehearsals before the Winter Break.  We are in a really good place with the majority of the songs in the set lists cast.  Once back from the Winter Break we will refocus and the count down to show time will be on!  Stay tuned for show dates coming soon!

 JV AUDITIONS
We are excited to announce the launch of JV House Band at School of Rock Silver Spring!  Auditions were held in December and the new JV band will begin rehearsing in January with their director Jeff. This is a program for students looking to invest more into their own musical development beyond the Performance Program. If you or your student is interested in playing more or contributing to a stronger school culture, contact Brooks at bowens@schoolofrock.com to learn more about the JV program and how to join.

House Band plays Sounds of The Season in Downtown Silver Spring

Our House Band played another awesome holiday set in Downtown Silver Spring this past December! With a setlist of festive holiday songs, House Band rocked out on the Fountain Stage as part of the annual Sounds of the Season concert series. We love playing in DTSS and performing for our local community. This was also the first gig for our new House Band line up and everyone did a spectacular job preparing the holiday material and putting on a fantastic show! We're already looking forward to next year!

Warm Welcome to New Staff Member Miriam

Miriam’s passion for music started when she was in middle school. Before learning any theory, she’d sit by the radio with her acoustic guitar and try to find notes to play along to her favourite songs. When she got to high school she joined a jazz ensemble, where she started playing bass and drums. Since then she has been consistently composing and performing with numerous different collaborative projects (Ekko Astral, Pretty Bitter), as well as writing, recording, and releasing her own music. When it comes to learning, her philosophy is simple: Learn to make the sounds you like, and always leave room to expand your horizons. Miriam will be splitting her time at School of Rock between the Silver Spring and Vienna Schools teaching Bass, Guitar and Drums. She has also been sitting in on some group rehearsals and we are thrilled to have her on board and sharing her positive energy.

Student Spotlight!

V!

V joined School of Rock in the Fall of 2020 and immediately jumped into the Performance Program with the Alt-Good show. Since then they have lended their hands to seven shows including The Who, Lollapalooza, The Beatles, Paramore, Seattle and is currently rocking out in the David Bowie show this season.  We can't wait to see where they go next season.  In additon to rocking out on stage V has been creating fantastic show posters the last few seasons. Lead instructor Jeff sat down with them to ask a few questions for our Student Spotlight and here is what they had to say.
You've experienced School of Rock as a one on one student and also as a member or the performance programs, what do you like about the SOR programs?
I like being able to see my friends and I feel like it makes my playing a lot better. It allows me to collaborate with people and work together. I like that it's a non judgemental space, everyone wants to have fun and it ends up sounding really good

How would you say your guitar playing has changed since joining SoR?
Before I joined SOR I couldn't use a pick and I couldn't solo at all. Now I know a lot more music theory and have a lot more performing experience. I can push myself but still make it fun and have the results that I want. Learning how to work with other people and learning composition helps me write songs and improvise melodies.
What are your musical influences?
L7, early AFI and Alice In Chains
What do you like about School of Rock?
I like being able to be with my friends, collaborating and I just love playing music, improving my playing and learning how to make friends.

What advice do you have for new students?
Play badly. As long as you're loud, play as badly as you like because you aren't going to improve if you don't start somewhere. Put yourself out there and being unapologetically annoying.

Inclement Weather

If you take your lesson in person or have a group that rehearses in person, please take note of how we will handle things.
On the day in question, we will determine if our staff can come in and return home safely, particularly for groups.  Often the timing of the storm allows us to continue our in person operations.  If you feel the roads are not safe, you may opt to take your in person lesson online for that day, just let us know.  We will post up on our
Facebook page and Instagram page if we are moving online and send an email if there are any changes to the in person lessons or groups on that day.  If you have a question shoot us an email, check our programs site, social media, or give us a call before you head out.

THOUGHTS FROM THE MOTHERSHIP
with Our Music Director -  Brooks

GOAL SETTING - Happy New Year! January is a great time to reflect on the progress you made last year and set goals for yourself in the year to come. Goal setting is an important part of understanding your own musical growth and watching your progress happen in real time. Goals can be short term (1-2 months), long term (the whole year), or anywhere in between. Maybe your goal is to sharpen your technique, develop your confidence on stage, or work on a new genre or style of music. Whatever it is, work with your instructor to set realistic goals for 2023. With the spring season approaching, think about which show theme you want to sign up for based on what goals it will help you accomplish, even if the goal is just getting started with a group program or playing in front of an audience for the first time.
