News That Rocks
The Rock 'n' Grohl Show will include an instrument we don't typically see at a School of Rock show.
Fe-brrrrrr-uary!
It's cold out there but we are gonna heat things up this month...

Fall Season Shows Are Right Around the Corner!

Our fall season of the Performance Program is almost over and we are getting ready for our end of season performances! Setlists are completed and the cast of each show is rocking out in rehearsals as they put the final touches on their performances to make them ready for the stage in just a few weeks. As we enter the home stretch of the season, attendance at rehearsals and practicing at home become more important than ever. If you know that you are unable to attend any remaining rehearsals, email Rose and let your show director know so we can plan ahead.

JV is Under Way

Our JV House Band is officially launched! After auditions in December, JV began rehearsing and working on their new setlist in January. If you are interested in the JV program, talk to our Music Director Brooks about how to join! JV members must be current Performance Program students and must audition to join. If you're looking to invest more in the program and in yourself as a musician, or if you're interested in auditioning for House Band in the future, JV is the place for you. Email Brooks on bowens@schoolofrock.com or check the program site for more information about the JV program.

House Band at Takoma Park Play Day

Our House Band will be performing as part of the 13th Annual Mid Winter Play Day sponsored by Let's Play America on February 12! Not only will this be a great opportunity to see House Band play in our local community, it will also have fun games and activities for the whole family and be a great way to spend your Sunday! House Band will be playing at the Takoma Park Community Center from 1-4 PM. We're so excited for our first gig of the new year and we hope to see you there!

Adult Performance Program - It's ON

We can't let the kids have all the fun this Spring. The Adult Performance Program or Grad School as we sometimes call it, will be exploring the New Wave Genre.  Interested? Didn't get the email announcement? Have questions? Not ready to perform but want to take your musicianship to the next level with Adult Rock 101?  Contact us at  silverspring@schoolofrock.com or call 301-589-7625.

Warm Welcome to New Staff Member Anton

Anton is a recent graduate of UMD College Park, where he earned a Bachelor of Music in voice performance and studied under Gran Wilson. He grew up performing in school choirs, orchestras, and theatre productions. During his time at UMD, Anton was the music director of Ethnobeat, a multilingual, multicultural a cappella group. He was also the music director of two musical theatre productions (Heathers: the Musical and A Chorus Line) for 32 Bars, a student-run musical theatre group. Anton hopes to combine his classical training with his love of various musical genres to help students build healthy vocal techniques.

Student Spotlight!
Marisa!

Marisa joined School of Rock back in 2019 as a Lessons Only student and after taking a ltttle break over the pandemic, rejoined us in July of 2022, just in time for  our Rockin' Across America Summer 2022 season. She was a welcome additon to the Philadelphia show. This season you can catch her on stage in the U2 show!
You've experienced School of Rock as a one on one student and also through performance, what do you like about the SOR programs?
I like that it's always a fun environment to be in and you never have to be worried about how you play or who's there because it's a welcoming environment to learn in.
How would you say your guitar playing has changed since joining SoR?
I've improved little things about my technique because I'm more aware of them. Learning how to play music with other people live really helps me learn how to adapt to the songs that I'm playing and keep going even if I make a mistake.
What are your musical influences?
I've liked Wallace, she's a smaller artist and she's independently creating music. Claro too, and The Smiths. They're lyrics are funny and the style is fun!

What do you like about School of Rock?
The people here are great, when I get here early there's always someone to talk to and hang out with. Part of the fun is hanging out with other musicians in performance and making music with them.

What advice do you have for new students?
Just have fun with it, focus on having fun and making music and the joy and creativity that can bring.

Inclement Weather

If you take your lesson in person or have a group that rehearses in person, please take note of how we will handle things.
On the day in question, we will determine if our staff can come in and return home safely, particularly for groups.  Often the timing of the storm allows us to continue our in person operations.  If you feel the roads are not safe, you may opt to take your in person lesson online for that day, just let us know.  We will post up on our
Facebook page and Instagram page if we are moving online and send an email if there are any changes to the in person lessons or groups on that day.  If you have a question shoot us an email, check our programs site, social media, or give us a call before you head out.

THOUGHTS FROM THE MOTHERSHIP
with Our Music Director -  Brooks

GIG ETIQUETTE- With our end of season shows for the fall coming up this month, it's a great time to review show etiquette! As a performer, you represent yourself, your bandmates, and the school whenever we play a show. Having a positive attitude and being friendly to audience members and venue staff is an absolute must. If you've never sound checked before or need a refresher on the process, ask your instructors or show director for some pointers on how to conduct yourself like a professional. Knowing the overall schedule of the day and where your songs fall in the setlist is another great way to make the day run smoothly for everyone. Once you're on stage, limiting dead air between songs is crucial. Finding someone on stage to shout out or introduce, thanking the venue for letting us play, or talking more about the songs you're playing are all great examples of effective stage banter and can make for a more professional and high energy show.

Summer Intern Program 2023 is Coming!

It may be cold outside but we're busy planning for summer!  Performance Program students ages 12 and up are eligible to participate in our Summer Intern Program where they learn leadership skills through mentoring campers, hang out with their peers and have fun rocking out.  We'll be posting the sign up info toward the end of the month so stay tuned!
