Gwynn Alexander
Gwynn Alexander has joined as the Program Development and Grants Coordinator supporting the Center for Urban Resilience Restorative Justice Project. She is focused in qualitative research and is interested in the intersections of restorative practices and qualitative methods. She has led multiple research projects evaluating restorative justice implementation in diverse contexts.

Tanynya Hekymara
Tanynya Hekymara has joined as an independent contractor and Trainer for the CURes Restorative Justice Project. Tanynya is dedicated to social justice and wellness. Her unique experience in every element of organizational leadership allows her to be a mindful, bold, and courageous truth-teller. Tanynya provides strategies of support through an intentional plan of action that brings the complex composition of a community into the work.

Roya Shahnazari
Roya Shahnazari has joined the CURes team as a Project Specialist, working closely alongside the Restorative Justice team. Roya is an MBA graduate from Loyola Marymount University who earned her masters with an emphasis in Marketing. Roya works with the CURes team to support administrative, financial, and marketing efforts within the organization’s various projects and initiatives.

Teo Anderson
Teo Anderson joins the CURes team as an undergraduate student employee. Teo is an Environmental Studies major from Seattle, Washington. An avid camper, hiker, and film buff, Teo joined CURes to explore different avenues for focusing on restorative justice within his career path and to learn more about how these projects function on a more local community level. Teo hopes to continue working in the greater Los Angeles area contributing to environmental justice wherever possible after graduation.

CALIFORNIA COASTAL COMMISSION HEARING ON BALLONA WETLANDS

Commission meetings occur to facilitate public participation and are scheduledclose to the location of a proposed development. The Land Manager for California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has requested all supporters of the restoration show up, submit comments, speak during the public comment period.

BALLONA CREEK INTERCEPTOR PILOT LAUNCH
On October 22, 2022, CURes attended the Ballona Creek Interceptor Pilot launch event hosted by Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell and Department of Public Works. The Los Angeles County Public Works Department also held a celebration with The Ocean Cleanup in the morning!

BUILDING THE WALLIS ANNEBERG WILDLIFE CROSSING
On October 21, 2022, CURes helped to celebrate Wallis Annenberg and The Annenberg Foundation as they accelerated donations with a record breaking $25 million challenge grant to the NWF. Beth Pratt discussed her journey, the long road to funding this project, and how to collaborate with local, city, and state leaders to ensure this project did not fail.

NEW PROJECTS & PARTNERSHIPS

| CALIFORNIA STATE PARKS
In August 2022, CURes launched a two-year project with California State Parks and Parks California to conduct a survey of visitors to the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area and Pismo State Beach. CURes research scientists will follow a similar approach as a previous study of the Baldwin Hills Parklands, to better understand the park users’ activities, perceptions, and knowledge related to the recreational areas.
THE NATURE CONSERVANCY
CURes recently started a partnership with The Nature Conservancy’s Baltimore Program, to examine the network of environmental stewardship funders in Baltimore, MD. Following the recommendations of the Chesapeake Bay Funders Network’s recent Baltimore Metro Region Capacity Assessment, the overall goal of this project is to build capacity & improve collaboration among Baltimore’s environmental stewardship organizations.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PROJECT

PASADENA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (PUSD)
In continuing with the federal Education Innovation and Research grant, and with support from the Collins Foundation, the RJ Project was thrilled to host two half-day workshops at two sites within Pasadena Unified School District. At both workshops, passionate educators came together to share in community-building circles as well as reflect on the leaders who inspire them most as means to craft their own purpose statement as visionary and uplifting teachers and mentors!
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA RESTORATIVE JUSTICE CONSORTIUM
Over the past two years, the RJ Project has hosted the Southern California Restorative Justice Consortium comprised of 80+ organizations bringing together practitioners, scholars, and advocates in the region. Held quarterly, the Consortium meetings offer a much-needed space for everyone to share best practices and to conduct research on implementation strategies used by stakeholders across sectors. The RJ Project serves in a leadership role to ensure the fidelity of RJ programming, promote collaboration, and conduct meaningful evaluation across the region.

THE LEARNING CENTER TOUR OF BALLONA DISCOVERY PARK
During the afternoon of Wednesday, August 17, 2022, LMU’s The Learning Community (TLC) partnered with CURes and the Office of Student Conduct and Community Responsibility (OSCCR) to host a tour and restorative practices circle experience in Ballona Discovery Park for over 30 black students.

NATURE'S BALANCE GARDENING WORKSHOP AT BALLONA
On Saturday, October 29, 2022, the Friends of Ballona Wetlands (FBW) hosted a Nature’s Balance Gardening Workshop in partnership with Loyola Marymount University’s Center for Urban Resilience in Ballona Discovery Park. Nature’s balance has to do with current worldwide trend to bring indigenous plants back in their native countries, especially urban areas. The balance can be reset for wildlife to thrive, benefiting humans as well.

Cities and the Environment (CATE), a web-based journal, aims to provide an international forum for urban researchers and practitioners to explore ecological theory, share relevant data and exchange best practices. The Editorial Board is pleased to announce the September 2022 publication of Volume 15, Issue 1 of the CATE Journal.

PEERJ LIFE & ENVIRONMENT ARTICLE
Spatiotemporal Relationships of Coyotes and Free-Ranging Domestic Cats as Indicators of Conflict in Culver City, California, authored by by Rebecca N. Davenport, Melinda Weaver, Katherine C. B. Weiss, Eric G. Strauss, was published in the Ecology section of PeerJ on October 7, 2022. Researchers placed 20 remote wildlife cameras across a range of green spaces and residential sites in Culver City, California, an area of Los Angeles County experiencing pronounced coyote-domestic cat conflict. Using data collected across 6 months from 2019–2020, they assessed the influence of green space and prey species and domestic cats on coyote habitat use and activity.
