Dear Student Affairs Colleagues,
As we near the end of the 2022-23 academic year, I want to thank you for your tremendous work on behalf of our students and the WashU community.
We have accomplished a lot this year and continue to make progress in advancing our strategic planning efforts. This includes launching the Dialogue Across Difference (DxD) program, receiving approval for University 101, which will begin as a course in Fall 2023, and more. Thank you for all you do to enhance our community and continue building our best-in-class student experience.
It is personally one of my very favorite months as we celebrate our students and welcome their families to St. Louis! Within this eNewsletter, you’ll find details on our upcoming Affinity Commencement Week, our professional development day on May 23, and how to nominate colleagues for our annual Student Affairs Awards.
Finally, we will host Dr. G’s Fun House on the Field tomorrow, Wednesday, May 3, on Mudd Field from 2-4:30 p.m. The event — free for all students, staff, and faculty — will feature food, games, student vendors, and more. We want as many students as possible to participate in this low-time commitment, high-engagement opportunity! Please share with students in your area.
Go Bears!

The first WashU Commencement Ceremony, held June 20, 1862, consisted of a public address by all five members of the graduating class, and an address to the graduating class by Chancellor William Chauvenet. Student addresses, usually in Latin or Greek, were the norm for commencement ceremonies at this time. The tradition of having every member of the class speak lasted until approximately 1880. From 1881 until 1905, speeches were given by selected members of the class, with fewer of these speeches being given in

Latin or Greek as time went on. Beginning in 1905, commencement took on the form similar to today's ceremony.
The first commencement ceremony on the Danforth Campus took place at the same time as the formal dedication of Campus in June of 1905. Early 20th century traditions of graduation included: planting a class tree, reading a class history and poem, and a “Senior Pilgrimage” during commencement week. In this event seniors, wearing cap and gown and followed by underclassmen, visited each major building on campus to give a tribute and remembrance. We look forward to celebrating WashU’s 162 Commencement Ceremony on Monday, May 15, 2023.
