Melissa Lund joined GHP on July 8 as a senior grants manager. Melissa joins GHP from the Research Administration Support Team (RAST), where she alternated between providing pre-award and post-award coverage for a variety of departments and also performed as a team lead. Melissa’s extensive Harvard experience also includes serving as the assistant director of finance for the Department of Environmental Health. Outside of research administration, Melissa is a talented musician who received her master of music degree at Boston University and performed with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. Nanki Singh returned to GHP on July 8 as a research assistant working on the India Health Systems Reform Project. She recently received her master of science degree from GHP, and her research interests focus on long-standing infectious disease challenges, health system strengthening, and health equity challenges in low- and middle-income countries. She has previously worked in the development sector in India with the Gates Foundation, the Ministry of Health, and USAID. Nanki can be reached via email at nankisingh@hsph.harvard.edu.

Shalom Sabwa will be leaving her full-time role as a research analyst at the QuEST Network and transitioning to a part-time role on July 31 so she can begin her PhD in epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. During her time at the QuEST Network, Shalom provided data analytics support for the People’s Voice Survey and eCohorts projects. She will continue collaborating with the team to analyze the data further and prepare reports that can be used by policymakers. Shalom can be reached via email at sabwa.shalom@gmail.com.

HBNU Fogarty Global Health Fellowship

The HBNU (Harvard University, Boston University, Northwestern University, and University of New Mexico) Partnership for Global Health Research Training Program provides mentored research opportunities to train and prepare a new cadre of health professionals in the U.S. and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) dedicated to research, health services, and academic careers. Specifically, it aims to enhance the trainees’ ability to independently plan, implement, and assess innovative clinical or operations research focused on reducing the mortality and morbidity associated with: HIV/AIDS and associated co-infections, non-communicable diseases including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, mental health, and maternal and child health and nutrition. Faith Agbozo, MPhil, PhD, is a senior lecturer at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, Ghana. She will spend her fellowship year at the University of Ghana in Accra, Ghana, under the mentorship of Drs. Samuel Oppong, BSc, MBChB, FWACS; Richard Adanu, MBChB, MPH, FWACS; and Wafaie Fawzi, MBBS, MPH, MS, DrPH. Her research will focus on quantifying the magnitude of women diagnosed with gestational diabetes in previous pregnancies who progress to develop type II diabetes 3–10 years after the index pregnancy and identify support services within the health system.

Josiane Fofana, PhD, recently earned her PhD from Boston University School of Medicine and is the founder of Sunu Askan, a non-profit organization that provides STEM education to children in K-12 in her hometown in Senegal. She will spend her fellowship year at the University of Ghana in Accra, Ghana, under the mentorship of Drs. Elijah Paintsil, MD, and Osbourne Quaye, PhD. Her research will focus on investigating the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the development of insulin resistance in people living with HIV.

Sonia Taneja, MD, is a chief resident and clinical instructor at Boston Medical Center. She will spend her fellowship at the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), New Delhi, India, and the Y.R. Gaitonde Center for AIDS Research and Education (YRGCARE) under the mentorship of Drs. Kenneth Mayer, MD, Lakshmi Ganapathi, MBBS, and Shomik Ray, MPH, MPhil. Her research will focus on parents as youth allies supporting recovery (PYAR), developing a family-centered psychosocial intervention to engage youth in HIV care and medications for opioid use disorder for young people who inject drugs in India.

Idiatou Diallo, PhD, recently defended her doctoral thesis at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She will spend her fellowship year at the University of Sciences, Techniques, and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB) in Bamako, Mali, under the guidance of Drs. David Henderson, MD, and Seydou Doumbia, MD, PhD. Her research will focus on exploring the connection between and understanding psychotic symptoms and sleep disturbances in Mali.

Mohamed Tolofoudie, MD, MSc, is a clinical investigator at the University Clinical Research Center (UCRC)/USTTB. He will spend his fellowship year at USTTB in Bamako, Mali, under the mentorship of Drs. Yeya dit Sarro, PharmD, MSPH, PhD, and Chad J. Achenbach, MD, MPH. His research will focus on the non-invasive diagnosis of tuberculosis in HIV-infected children using tongue swabs in Bamako, Mali.

Margaret Akinwaare, DSN, is a senior lecturer at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She will spend her fellowship year at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria under the mentorship of Drs. Chizoma M. Ndikom, RN, RM, PhD, and Jonah Musa, MBBS, PhD. Her research will focus on the effect of digitalized antenatal education on prevention of mother-to-child transmission and birth outcomes among pregnant women living with HIV in Southwest Nigeria.

Kolawole Oluseyi Akande, MBBS, is a senior lecturer in gastroenterology and hepatology in the department of medicine, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. He will spend his fellowship year at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, under the mentorship of Drs. Claudia Hawkins, MD, and Okechukwu S. Ogah, MBBS, MD, PhD. His research will focus on the characterization of novel biomarkers in African patients with chronic hepatitis B, with or without HIV co-infection (CNAP-HBV/HIV study).

She will spend her fellowship year at University of Jos andJos University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria under the mentorship of Drs. Godwin Imade, FMLSCN, MSc, PGD, PhD, and Jonah Musa, MBBS, PhD. Dr. Ameh’s research will focus on human papillomavirus genotypes in the oral mucosa of HIV-positive pregnant women in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria.

Fatima Damagum, MBBS, is a consultant family physician working at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. She will spend her fellowship year at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano, Nigeria, under the mentorship of Drs. Baba Maiyaki Musa, MBBS, FWACP, MPH; Phyllis Kanki, BS, DVM, DSc; and Muktar Aliyu, MD, DrPH, MPH. Her research will focus on female sexual dysfunction among women with diabetes: burden, correlates, and treatment modalities.

Philip Hsu, MD, PhD, is a general surgery resident at the University of Michigan. He will spend his fellowship year at University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) in Rwanda under the mentorship of Drs. He will spend his fellowship year at the University of Cape Town Neuroscience Institute (UCTNI) in South Africa under the mentorship of Drs. Mubeen Goolam, PhD, Kristopher T. Kahle, MD, PhD, and Graham Fieggen, BSc, MBChB, MSc, FCS, MD. His research is focused on cerebral organoids as a model for genetic and acquired hydrocephalus.

Tumelo Moshoette, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow at the HIV Pathogenesis Programme at the University of KwaZulu Natal, Durban, South Africa. He will spend his fellowship year at the HIV Pathogenesis Research Programme at the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) in South Africa under the mentorship of Drs. Thumbi Ndung’u, BVM, PhD, and Douglas Kwon, MD, PhD. His research project will focus on characterizing antibody responses to the vaginal microbiota.

Peter Karoli, MD, is a research officer at the Tanzania National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR). He will spend his fellowship year at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania under the mentorship of Drs. Grace Shayo, MD, MMed, PhD, and Lisa Hirschhorn, MD, MPH, PhD. His research is focused on dietary and physical activity knowledge and practices to reduce cardiometabolic risk factors among people living with HIV in Dar es Salaam.

Grace Kansiime, MBChB, is a lecturer at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Mbarara, Uganda, and head of the internal medicine department. She will spend her fellowship year at MUST under the mentorship of Drs. Francis Bajunirwe, MBChB, MSc, PhD; Mark Siedner, MD, MPH; Robert Kalyesubula, MD, PhD; and Esther Mugyenyi, PhD. Her research is focused on outcomes and healthcare needs of patients with HIV and kidney disease in Uganda.

Winnie Kibone, MBChB, is a medical doctor at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Uganda. She will spend her fellowship year at MUST in Mbarara, Uganda under the mentorship of Drs. Muzoora K. Conrad, MBChB, MMed; Davidson Hamer, MD; and Felix Bongomin, MBChB, MMed, MSc. Her research focuses on navigating dual diagnoses and exploring the lived experiences of individuals living with sickle cell disease and HIV in Uganda.

Health System Assessment and Diagnosis Course
The Health System Assessment and Diagnosis course will run from August 27 to October 2024. The course consists of 10 modules and adopts the Getting Health Reform Right Framework, a pioneering approach to analyzing health systems. Participants will learn the methodologies and data necessary for conducting comprehensive assessments and diagnosis, enriched with case studies from India and other nations. This free, virtual course is organized by the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and the Harvard India Health Systems Reform Project. Please visit the course website for more information. High Quality Health Systems: Assessing Performance and Improving at Scale
This one-week course will run from October 21 to 25, 2024 and will review the conceptual frameworks of health systems and quality of care and discuss how these can be used to organize measurement and performance assessment. This course will be led by Margaret Kruk, professor of health systems, and Diana Bowser, associate dean for research and integrated science at the Boston College Connell School of Nursing.
