Congratulations to all labs that participated in the International Freezer Challenge 2023! With 56 participating labs and an estimated 1202 kWh/day saved, Johns Hopkins University received an institutional Honorable Mention, competing against over 170 academic, government, and industry organizations!
Special accolades were awarded to GI-Oncology at the School of Medicine for earning the "Top Large Lab, Academic Division" at the International Freezer Challenge, saving an estimated 119 kWh/day. Additionally, both the Cihakova Lab and the Quinn/Tobian Lab received Honorable Mentions in the academic category in the International Freezer Challenge. Read about their specific accomplishments here.
At JHU, Facilities and Real Estate awarded $5,000 to each of the top-performing labs in their respective divisions for minimizing the environmental impacts of their cold-storage units. This year, our top-performers completed numerous actions, including defrosting, chilling up to -70C, and discarding enough samples to retire entire units. The top performers were:
|
Schwab Lab (Bloomberg School of Public Health)
Quinn/Tobian Lab (School of Medicine)
Fleming Lab (Homewood Campus)
|
Congratulations again to all our winners! Interested in learning ways to reduce the impact of your cold storage units and compete for the top spots (and prizes) in the 2024 Freezer Challenge? Sign up to receive more information on the Freezer Challenge here.
