March 20, 2020
Greetings from the Tufts Career Center
We know that this is a stressful and uncertain time for all. We hope you are safe, sound, and healthy wherever your travels have taken you, and rest assured that we at the Career Center are here to help you navigate a path forward.
We remain committed to serving students and helping you work toward your career goals.
Today, we're writing with information on two topics: scheduling appointments and strengthening your resiliency.
Going forward, we'll highlight a different career topic each week, complete with online resources, videos, and expert advice. We'll also tell you about upcoming virtual events and share tools for lowering stress and strengthening your resiliency during this challenging time.
In the meantime, stay safe and healthy!

Scheduling an Appointment with a Career Advisor

The Tufts Career Center will remain open throughout Spring 2020 with normal hours. Individual career advising appointments and quick questions (formerly drop-ins) will be held by phone and via virtual meetings (through Zoom) through the last day of classes, April 27.
Students who have currently scheduled appointments should log in to Handshake and edit the appointment medium from “in-person” to “phone" (provide a phone number) or "virtual (Zoom)."
If you're new to using Zoom, please check out this user guide for an overview of this video conferencing tool.

Stay Tuned ... Tips for Engaging Virtually with Employers
Thinking about internships or job opportunities? Even though most things have moved online, there are still plenty of ways to engage with employers. Next week you'll receive a message via Handshake devoted to strategies for researching potential employers and connecting with those organizations.
Spotlight on ... Strengthening Your Resiliency
There's no time like the present to build your resiliency -- that ability to bounce back and find ways to keep going amid the stresses and struggles of life.
Here are a few strategies from the American Psychological Association (APA), with more linked below.
  • Prioritize relationships. Connecting with empathetic and understanding people can remind you that you’re not alone in the midst of difficulties.
  • Take care of your body. Stress is just as much physical as it is emotional. Proper nutrition, ample sleep, hydration and regular exercise can strengthen your body to adapt to stress and reduce the toll of emotions like anxiety or depression.
  • Understand what works for you. Everyone relieves stress in different ways. Perhaps you enjoy walks outside or reading a favorite book. Maybe you like to journal or practice yoga (if the latter, try Yoga with Adriene!). But whether it's a virtual museum tour or FaceTime with a friend, do something every day to re-center and rejuvenate.
  • Keep things in perspective. Try to identify areas of irrational thinking, such as a tendency to catastrophize difficulties, and adopt a more balanced and realistic thinking pattern. You may not be able to change a highly stressful event, but you can change how you interpret and respond to it.
