Featured Project: Camp Tuckahoe Acquisition Supports Wildlife, Water Quality, and Recreation in Southcentral Pennsylvania

The Central Pennsylvania Conservancy recently closed on its acquisition of Camp Tuckahoe, a 900-acre property straddling Cumberland and York counties.
Part of the South Mountain Conservation Landscape, Camp Tuckahoe is an asset for southcentral Pennsylvania. Fully forested, the property serves as a crucial corridor for species migration.
“This wooded landscape features a diversity of plants and wildlife, while protecting the headwaters of Dogwood Run, a tributary of the Yellow Breeches Creek,” former Central Pennsylvania Conservancy Executive Director Jason Beale said.
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources supported the acquisition with a grant of more than $1.1 million.
While the property is not yet open to the public, it will soon provide impressive recreation access. “The protected area will be transferred to Michaux State Forest and will feature over seven miles of trails open to the public,” Beale explained. The property borders National Park Service land for the Appalachian Trail.
The transfer to Michaux State Forest is planned for 2025.

Featured Project Update: New Video Highlights Expanded Access to Lackawaxen River

Back in June, we shared a story about the opening of the White Mills River Access in northeastern Pennsylvania. That opening was one of three planned access points to create the first official public access to the Lackawaxen River.
Now the third access point, at Sycamore Point Park in Honesdale, has opened, completing the trio.
Pocono Mountains recently released a video highlighting the new access point—the northernmost spot to put in along the Lackawaxen.
“We are super excited about this,” says Dan Corrigan of Lackawaxen River Trails in the video. “The idea of having these different access points really lends itself to giving people the opportunity and option to choose the type of river trip they want.”

Funding Opportunity: Resilient and Connected Appalachians Grant Program Offers Funding to Support Land Protection

The Nature Conservancy is now accepting applications for its Resilient and Connected Appalachians Grant Program.
The program offers funding for non-profit organizations, municipalities, and other partners to engage in conservation efforts in the Appalachians.
Grants of up to $100,000 are available for both fee and easement land acquisition projects.
The grants will prioritize funding for projects in one of the Nature Conservancy’s focal areas. Use the grant program’s mapping tool to determine if your project will take place in one of these areas.
A webinar on January 15 will provide more information about the grants.
Applications are due February 7. To apply, use the grant program application.
