Cooking grease can ruin your holidays: Tips to prevent sewer backups

Every holiday season, we see an increase in sewer backups caused by used cooking grease, oils, and fats being poured down a sink drain. Help us prevent these back-ups by following these year-round tips:

Can your grease. Take left over grease and pour it into an empty soup can or some other heat-resistant container. If it's oil, pour it into a container with a cap.
Once the grease cools and turns solid, throw it in your trash. If it’s still liquid, make sure you close the container to prevent making a mess.

Rake responsibly this fall

Please do not rake or blow leaves onto your streets, ditches, or storm drains. Leaves can clog storm drains and cause local flooding. Rotting leaves also contribute to algae blooms that can harm local fish and other marine life.

Please bag, mulch, or compost your leaves this fall to protect Westminster’s waterways.

Our annual leaf and pumpkin composting event is back! Bring your pumpkins and bagged leaves to be composted for future use in our city’s parks and green spaces. Westminster residents only.

Financial assistance for water bills available for limited-income families

The Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) now offers support for your water bill! If your income is 60% of the state median income or less, you may qualify for both water and winter heating bill assistance. Please apply as soon as possible because funding is limited.
