COVID-19 Campus Mitigation Plan
Liesl Folks, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost
Our top priority is your health and safety. We are working to balance that with the need to support your academic goals, and, to the best extent possible, continue to deliver life-changing educational experiences.
As you know, the start of classes has been delayed until Wednesday, March 18, to allow our campus time to move away from in-person instruction. All available campus resources will be directed to this effort.
As you return to campus, here is what you can expect:
- All classes will resume.
- Residence halls, food services, recreation facilities and Campus Health are fully operational, with additional precautions in place.
- Almost all classes will migrate to remote learning modes, beginning immediately.
- Classes will continue in online mode until Monday, April 6, at which time the University will assess its operational status.
- Changes in the delivery of your classes will be communicated to you directly by your faculty / instructors.
- Class attendance protocols have been adjusted to align with CDC guidance. We do want you to stay home if you feel unwell.
- Cleaning and disinfectant protocols have been greatly increased across campus.
- Student employees should expect their employment and wages to continue.
Classmates and community members will be using social distancing and enhanced personal hygiene to protect themselves and others, and we ask you to be respectful of their choices. Keep in mind that those at most risk are the elderly and those with underlying illnesses. Please limit non-essential contact with these populations.

UA Class Absence Practices
Liesl Folks, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost
We are modifying our protocol and practices for class absences to align with the advice from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on how best to limit the spread of infectious diseases, especially with the current concern over the spread of the new coronavirus, COVID-19. Academic departments and instructors have been asked to accommodate students who need to be out of classes due to illness. Starting on Monday 16 March 2020, our campus protocol will be as follows:
- You should stay at home if you feel sick, and most especially if you think you may have an infectious disease.
- If you need to miss a class, or series of classes, due to illness, you are responsible for emailing your course instructor(s), with a copy to the Dean of Students at DOS-deanofstudents@email.arizona.edu, as soon as possible (ideally in advance of the classes) to let them know.
- You are responsible for completing any work that you miss, including assignments, quizzes, tests and exams.
- You are responsible for communicating with your instructor(s) via the means of communication established by your professor(s) (D2L, email, text, etc.).
- If you need to miss more than 1 week of classes in any one semester you will be required to provide a doctor’s note of explanation to DOS-deanofstudents@email.arizona.edu. The doctor’s note does not need to include details regarding the health issue, just a statement indicating that the diagnosis warranted absence from class.
- The Dean of Students Office will communicate the receipt of the note (with expected end date) to the relevant faculty.
- Students who are working off campus doing internships, clinical rotations, practicums, or other forms of experiential learning should closely adhere to the absence policies of the organizations in which they are embedded.

CALS Career Center Availability
Given the guidance from the University regarding COVID-19 and encouragement to practice social distancing, the CALS Career Center is postponing all events scheduled through April 6. We will also have very limited staffing in the career center during this period.
However, we are working remotely and available to offer you support. If you have questions, need us to review document drafts, want to practice interviews, etc. please email Bridget (bewrad@arizona.edu) or Valeria (vmartinez@arizona.edu). We will be available to offer you the best virtual support we can during this time. We also know many of you have upcoming interviews and if they are not already scheduled to be online, they may likely move online in the coming weeks. You can conduct these at home utilizing Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts and other conferencing technology; here is a good article to help you prepare for that virtual interview. If you have any questions or need additional support regarding your interview, please reach out to Bridget or Valeria. We appreciate your patience during this time and wish you good health until we see you again!

Life Management Counseling
No-cost life management counseling is now available for undergraduate students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Ryan Daily, a licensed professional counselor, provides confidential counseling designed to assist CALS students in reaching your educational and life goals. Whether you are feeling anxiety related to COVID-19 or are experiencing other life events that are emotionally challenging, this service is here to help you.
How to Schedule an Appointment
Due to COVID-19 concerns, in-person counseling sessions are not currently available, but you are encouraged to meet with Ryan using the audio/video platform Zoom:
- Students currently receiving direct counseling support from a life management counselor may continue to keep their appointment via telehealth by using the audio/video platform Zoom. Please email Ryan Daily directly for the scheduling link.
- Students wanting to schedule an initial appointment with a life management counselor, but who feel they are OK to wait until in-person services resume are asked to wait until in-person services resume.
- If students feel that they need to have an initial appointment with a life management counselor before in-person services resume, please email Ryan Daily to discuss options.
