Dear Cathedral Family,

On Ash Wednesday, we held our traditional all-school service to distribute ashes to our school family and to remind and educate our students about the importance of Lent. It is one of the landmark days of the year for me, as I was introduced to the school on Ash Wednesday, 2017. I remember it well; it was Spirit Week at the school, and despite my sophomore daughter Gabi’s “dress up” clothing and mine, the students were mostly wearing Star Wars attire. I brought a six-pack of Mountain Dew and a box of donuts to demonstrate what I would normally give up for Lent. This past week, I told the students I would distribute baskets through the crowd, collect everyone’s cell phone, and give them back on Easter Sunday. "What a great Easter that would be," I said. The stunned silence of the 1,130 students was palpable. I let the moment sit there for a moment, then said, “Don’t worry; I won’t do it. But I want to!”

The moral of the lesson to our students is similar to the lessons over the years; we are each capable of doing great things every day. And we are also capable of doing very bad things. That is called free will.  The rapid advancement of technology, particularly cell phones and social media, has exacerbated some of the unfortunate choices our kids choose to make. Lent is a time to reset for all of us. And it is really all about love. Last month we celebrated what used to be called Saint Valentine’s Day, which was a day initially named for one of many actual people who were named Saint Valentine. But the day was founded on the primary and powerful idea of love.

And now, as we enter the Lenten season of trying to align our habits more closely with Jesus so that we can appreciate his suffering, and the joy of his resurrection, it is still about love. After all, we know from scripture that there’s no greater love than to lay down your life for a friend, and Jesus did that for millions of friends. So, as we journey through the month of March with a hopeful eye toward the green grass and the warm air of spring, please know that the sublime message of Jesus and his love for us is at the core of what we do at Cathedral High School. As it says in the prologue of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “…all the works of perfect Christian virtue spring from love and have no other objective than to arrive at love.”

Last weekend, more than 700 Cathedral supporters gathered at our school in a spirit of joy and love at our annual ShamrAuction. Final numbers are being tallied, but I can share that our Fund-A-Need for health and wellness at Cathedral brought in a whopping $97,322! Thank you, donors!

Our Leadership Team is actively working to raise funds for three exciting projects, includng a new Health & Wellness Center, a Performing Arts Studio, and a Soccer/Lacrosse Field at Brunette Park. We also continue to hire and nurture a family of Educators who show kindness, joy, and creativity each day while excelling at this noble vocation. Our enrollment numbers are strong, and our future is bright. With the love of Jesus Christ and the timeless model of a Holy Cross education guiding us, greatness continues to call on the Hill.

May God be praised, and Go Irish!
In love,
Rob Bridges
