The César Chávez Day Celebration Program

Join us on March 30 as we celebrate the life and legacy of César Estrada Chávez, a champion for social justice and advocate for the rights and dignity of working people. This year's celebration is part of the Across the Divide Conference, the primary Diversity and Inclusion showcase for Miami University, and is entitled Leading Through Innovation and Creativity for Transformative Inclusion.
Joining us will be Mexican poet Manuel Iris. Iris is the Poet Laureate Emeritus of the City of Cincinnati, Ohio (2018-2020). He has published poetry, essay and translation in magazines and literary journals from Mexico, Spain, Chile, Cuba, Colombia, Portugal, France, the United States, and Angola.

In this workshop, participants will discuss writing as a form of translating the silences of the human experience into words. The poet is a migrant of the human experience, a translator of silences. Keeping the dignity of the stories we share and hear is part of the poetic work. Migration, translation, and creativity are the central themes of this workshop. Register for the workshop.

During this presentation, Manuel Iris will talk about his writing process and the development of his identity as a migrant poet in the US. He will read poems, in English and Spanish, to illustrate the link between life and poetics. After the presentation, he will engage in a conversation with the audience.

Faculty Research Profile: Sina Esteky

Concentrating on branding and marketing in different cultural contexts, Sina Esteky conducts research that spans multiple continents. His work has been published in leading academic journals and has been widely featured in major news outlets. At Miami, Dr. Esteky is the director of the Design and Consumer Research Lab and a faculty affiliate in Emerging Technology in Business and Design (ETBD).

Conn Selected for Fulbright Specialist Program

| W. E. Smith Professor of History Steven Conn has been invited to conduct a Fulbright Specialist Program (FSP) project at West University of Timișoara in Romania. Conn's two-week project, "Crisis in American Popular Culture," will take place at the end of March.

Funded by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides graduating seniors, graduate students, and recent graduates with the opportunity to conduct independent research, pursue a graduate degree, or teach English abroad. Join Global Initiatives at upcoming information sessions to learn more about Fulbright opportunities and the application process. Applications for the 2024-2025 academic year will be due in early Fall 2023.
