| FAQ of the Month
I'm thinking about leaving my current job, but I want to make sure I do it the "right" way. Any tips?
Whether you're considering a job transition sometime this year or perhaps far in the future, it's natural to continually evaluate your career journey. If you reach a point where a departure is imminent, ask yourself the following questions:
- How will you announce your decision? Once you’ve decided to part ways with your current employer, think about who you need to notify -- and in what order.
- How much notice will you give? While two weeks is standard, it’s helpful to give your employer -- especially your direct supervisor -- more advance notice if you can. (Caveat: You work for an organization that does not allow people to keep working once they resign.)
- What will you do to ease the transition? Ensure that various projects and assignments are as complete as possible and determine ways to clear the path for a successor, e.g., compile best practices or revise training materials.
- How will you stay connected to former co-workers? Send a mass email to say farewell, connect with various people on LinkedIn, and/or share your personal email with select individuals.
