DHVI Receives Grant to Develop Pan- Coronavirus Vaccine
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has awarded $17.5 million over three years to the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) to develop a vaccine that protects against multiple types of coronaviruses and viral variants. Researchers at DHVI announced they designed a pan-coronavirus vaccine earlier this year that demonstrated protectiveness against SARS-CoV-2 and variants, as well as the original SARS-CoV-1 and related bat coronaviruses that could potentially cause the next pandemic. Pan-coronavirus vaccine research at DHVI includes a multi-disciplinary team and key collaborators from UNC-Chapel Hill, Los Alamos National Library, University of Pennsylvania, and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

A Bipartisan Review of North Carolina's Pandemic Response
During the spring of 2020, state leaders and organizations across North Carolina hurried to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic, while North Carolinians’ responses to the pandemic became increasingly polarized. One group of policy, business, and non-profit leaders used their participation in Duke University’s North Carolina Leadership Forum (NCLF) to reach across partisan lines, enhance understanding of other perspectives, and explore ways to advance North Carolina’s interests and pandemic response from a position of common understanding. The 34 participants in the 2020 NCLF cohort included members of the General Assembly, state and local officials, and leaders of nonprofit, philanthropic and business organizations representing a range of ideologies, professional experiences, and regional perspectives.

Duke Researchers Found Masking Limited COVID-19 Transmission in NC Schools Despite Delta Variant
A masking mandate in North Carolina schools during the early weeks of the Delta variant surge resulted in a lower rate of infection among school children and staff members than what was reported in the broader community, according to a new report from the ABC Science Collaborative with the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Publishing in the journal Pediatrics, the analysis includes data from 20 school districts in North Carolina that held summer school or year-round school between June 14, 2021, and Aug. 13, 2021. The Delta variant became the dominant strain of SARS-CoV-2 circulating in the United States in early July 2021.

Work Begins on New Duke Health Habitat for Humanity House
Duke University and Duke Health have had a long-standing relationship with Durham Habitat for Humanity over the years, with more than 20 homes being sponsored by Duke-affiliated entities. This month, Duke Health volunteers began work on a new Habitat for Humanity Home for a fellow Duke employee. The house is one of 21 that Habitat is building in the neighborhood to address the critical need for affordable housing in the region.

Duke and UNC Research Teams Awarded $1.5M for Breast Cancer ResearchNational breast cancer organization Susan G. Komen announced the awarding of $1.5 million total for three new metastatic breast cancer research projects — each co-led by a Duke Cancer Institute investigator and a UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center investigator. These particular grant awards will boost evidence-based research into the biological and societal drivers of breast cancer metastasis and mortality to catalyze the development of potential new treatments.

Home to the Duke Translational Population Health Research (TransPop) group, CTSI's research facility boasts a highly productive team of clinical research coordinators, project managers, data technicians and regulatory, community engagement, and administrative staff. The team supports numerous clinical research studies, including the 12,500-participant MURDOCK Study Community Registry and Biorepository. A virtual tour of Duke's research campus in Kannapolis is now available.
