Hi everyone! My name is Mateo, and I am from San Diego, CA. I am a junior chemical engineering major with pre-medicine and a minor in bioengineering. I hope to go on to pursue an MD/PhD program to become a physician scientist, performing research and conducting clinical work. This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, NY in the SURP4US program. The Icahn School of Medicine is a leading medical school, positioned at the edge of Harlem and Manhattan. As a SURP4US student, I was able to conduct two research projects at the Cardiovascular Research institute, shadow physicians at Mount Sinai health campuses across New York, and learn about the opportunities at the Icahn School of Medicine and Mount Sinai offer. This program allowed me to further my knowledge of the medical field as I work towards applying for medical school in the coming years.
Over the last two years at Notre Dame, I have really enjoyed meeting and making many new friends and experiencing so many new things with them. I am also very grateful for the community I am a part of, as it is very supportive so that everyone can succeed. Through Galvin, I have met many of my close friends, and have built a strong network that I know I can rely upon if I need help. I really enjoy being a Galvin tutor, peer mentor, and ASCEND Coach because I can connect with Galvin scholars and hear their experiences throughout the school year. In my free time, I enjoy watching TV, Netflix, and reading to step back from the busyness of school. Feel free to reach out to me, I am always happy to help with anything!

What a Great Start to the Year! |
We kicked off the year with a Poster Session and a welcome to the new Galvin Cohort on August 24th. We had close to 40 poster presenters. Professor Young started the event with a warm welcome and overview of the program. Then the Galvin Scholars Leadership Committee introduced themselves. The event moved to Jordan's Galleria for the poster session. For events like this, make sure to visit our Facebook and Instagram accounts to look for pics!
