Highlighted Funding Opportunities
Funding Opportunity: DOD Releases Defense Education and Civilian University Research Partnership
DOD released a funding opportunity announcement for Minerva’s Defense Education and Civilian University Research (DECUR) partnership. DECUR provides funding for partnerships between civilian universities and Professional Military Education (PME) institutions to conduct social science research of interest to DOD, with the goal of building stronger relationships with the social science community. The nine topics of interest for this program are the same as the priorities listed under the Minerva Research Initiative, DOD’s signature social science research program. White papers, while not mandatory, are strongly encouraged and should be submitted no later than September 8, 2022, at 3:00p ET. Full applications should be submitted no later than November 22, 2022, at 3:00p ET. DOD anticipates funding five to six awards at $200,000 per year for two years, totaling $2 million in funding. NSF Building Synthetic Microbial Communities for Biology, Mitigating Climate Change, Sustainability, and Biotechnology (Synthetic Communities)
Full Proposal due October 3, 2022 The goal of this solicitation is to support research that addresses one or more of the three themes: 1) define the underlying mechanisms or rules that drive the formation, maintenance or evolution of synthetic microbial communities, 2) use synthetic microbial communities to address fundamental biological questions, including questions in molecular biology, cellular/organismal biology, ecology and evolution and/or 3) build synthetic communities with biotechnology, bio-economy or environmental engineering applications, including but not limited to the production of novel bio-renewable chemicals, bio-degradation of recalcitrant or "forever chemicals," enabling a circular bio-economy, fostering sustainable agriculture and mitigating the impacts of climate change. NSF Partnership to Advance Conservation Science and Practice (PACSP)
Full Proposal due October 11, 2022 The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation are partnering to support a new program that will support conservation science and science-informed conservation practice. The objective of the PACSP Program is to support conservation research that investigates organismal biology, ecology, and/or evolution and is designed to contribute to the development and implementation of evidence-based activities and/or technology solutions to advance biodiversity conservation. The Program's focus is on conservation goal-related research that will directly translate to on-the-ground biodiversity conservation efforts. Proposals that adopt a convergent approach between climate change, conservation, and the health of ecosystems and the organisms therein are especially encouraged. Learn More
NIH-NIA Transformative Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Based Strategies to Identify Determinants of Exceptional Health and Life Span (R21/R33 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Application due October 21, 2022 This FOA invites applications seeking to develop novel, transformative artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) strategies and computer automation to integrate, extract, and interpret multi-omic (i.e., genome, epigenome, transcriptome, proteome, metabolome, microbiome, phenome) data sets from human exceptional longevity (EL) cohorts and multiple non-human species that display a wide variation in life span, and to decipher the relationships between DNA, RNA, proteins, metabolites, and other cell variables, as well as links to disease risks and exceptionally healthy aging. The investigative team(s) for this FOA is/are expected to be multi-disciplinary, encompassing expertise in AI/ML and a variety of disciplines, including, but not limited to, aging biology, comparative biology, and bio/chemo informatics.
