A Message from Geneva Henry, Vice Provost for Libraries and Information Technology |
I am pleased to announce that GW’s enterprise Data Lake is officially in production. This milestone marks a significant step forward in our data strategy. The GW Data Lake brings together information from key systems, including our major Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platforms as well as other unstructured data sources, into a unified, cloud-based environment. This creates a robust and flexible data ecosystem for improved data flow and data governance, and enables advanced analytics and machine learning.
Initial Systems in the Data Lake

- Banner SaaS – Details metadata for the cloud-based Banner platform supporting academic and administrative operations.
- BMC Helix (formerly known as Remedy) – Documents data used for IT service management and support operations.
- Degree Works – Outlines data supporting academic planning and advising for students and advisors.
-

We are entering the next phase of our data strategy with the launch of our Data Lake Quality Initiative and continued expansion of the Data Lake. The Quality Initiative is designed to ensure our data is accurate, consistent and trusted to build a foundation to drive strategic outcomes and operational excellence.
Our next step is operationalizing the framework by defining data quality standards, cataloging rules across key domains, and implementing automated monitoring to track and improve data health over time. At the same time, we will continue to expand the Data Lake by including unstructured data such as documents, logs, and files. This initiative will enhance our ability to generate deeper analytical insights and support more informed decision-making across the university.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this transformative effort. We look forward to continued collaboration as we unlock new possibilities through data.

Windows 11 Upgrade Nearing Completion: Upgrade Your Device Now! |
GW IT has successfully deployed Windows 11 to over 80% of GW managed devices, including upgrading 100% of academic devices before the start of the fall semester. We deeply appreciate everyone who has upgraded to Windows 11.
With Windows 11, the GW community benefits from:
-
A streamlined and modern user interface
- Enhanced performance and productivity features
- Improved integration with Microsoft services
- Stronger security protections to safeguard your work
Any remaining GW-managed machines not upgraded to Windows 11 or exempted by December 19 may lose access to GW resources. To avoid any disruptions, please take immediate action.
-
Without Windows security updates, outdated systems present security risks.
- If you are unable to upgrade to Windows 11, contact GW IT.

Banner Modernization Project Update |
The Banner Modernization project is moving forward with upgrading core student information and HR systems, and migrating to the cloud for improved efficiency and a modern user experience (Banner SaaS).
Key Progress:
-
Completed some foundational integrations and reports.
- Successfully launched the first Ellucian Intelligent Process (workflow) for the Veterans' Office.
- Active focus groups are designing the new Self-Service Portal (GWeb), the unified entry point for Banner SaaS.
-
Executed the first "day in the life" simulation in late October to test performance with some lessons learned.
- These simulations will be repeated to validate data and rigorously test/optimize key business processes before the go-live date.
Student Support Enhancements (Current Banner):
-
Delivered Global Proxy Access in September, allowing authorized staff (Registrar's, Financial Aid, etc.) to view a student's self-service pages from their perspective.
- Planning for the Spring semester to roll out Standard Proxy Access, enabling students to securely grant access to select self-service pages for a parent or guardian.
