Welcome to Miami!

Congratulations on joining the Miami University Class of 2025! We are thrilled to welcome you to the Miami Family! This is the first of many Hawk Herald newsletters you will receive during your first year at Miami. The Hawk Herald is designed specifically for new Miami students; each edition is packed with information, tips, and resources to support your transition to academic and student life at Miami.

The First-Year Orientation Process

Your next step as a confirmed Miami student is to engage in the first-year orientation process. Through orientation, you will build important connections with student leaders, faculty, staff, and the Miami community; learn about your academic curriculum and important resources and opportunities; set goals and join student organizations; and register for fall classes.
Orientation 2021 includes five steps, each of which builds on the previous step:

Orientation Canvas course - virtual, asynchronous

The Canvas course will introduce students to academic and student life, campus resources, and opportunities. The course will be available for confirmed students beginning on May 3. You will be able to reference information in the course throughout their first year. You must complete through module 10 of the orientation Canvas course before becoming eligible for academic advising and registration for the fall semester, and all Canvas content should be completed by July 15.

Virtual Real-Time orientation program - virtual, synchronous

Virtual real-time orientation programs will complement Canvas content and provide greater depth through synchronous, interactive sessions, where you and family members you invite can ask questions and learn from campus representatives. These programs will foster a connection to peers, faculty, and staff, increasing a sense of belonging and community at Miami. Programs will be offered on the following dates (all times are Eastern):
  • Friday, May 21, 12:00 - 4:00 pm
  • Monday, May 24, 1:00 - 5:00 pm
  • Tuesday, May 25,  3:00 - 7:00 pm
  • Thursday, May 27, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
  • Tuesday, June 1, 3:00 - 7:00 pm
  • Wednesday, June 2, 4:00 - 8:00 pm
  • Saturday, June 5, 11:00 am - 3:00 pm
  • Monday, June 7, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
  • Thursday, June 10, 2:00 - 6:00 pm
  • Saturday,  June 12, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
  • Monday, June 14, 12:00 - 4:00 pm
  • Tuesday, June 22, 1:00 - 5:00 pm

Academic advising and course registration - virtual, synchronous

After completing through module 10 of the Orientation Canvas course, you will sign up for an academic advising appoitnment and  meet virtually with an academic advisor in your area of study. On the Friday after you complete your academic advising meeting, you will register for classes. All appointments will take place in June and early July.

(Optional) Miami Bound programs - in-person

You will have the option to visit campus through a variety of in-person workshops, events, and multi-day experiences before classes begin. The primary goal of these in-person experiences is to build connections to campus and each other. Events may be multi-day programs focused on a specific topic, or shorter one-day programs. Registration for Miami Bound programs begins May 3 at 1:00 pm Eastern. Each program will have a limited capacity.

Welcome Weekend & First 50 Days - mostly in-person, some virtual

Welcome Weekend & First 50 Days is a robust series of programs designed to welcome new students to Miami. Welcome Weekend will include a variety of ways for you to connect in your communities of interest: academic departments/majors, residence halls, identity-related affinities, and other interest areas. Transition experiences and events will continue with daily offerings during the first 6-weeks of classes, further supporting the academic and social transitions of new students.

Set Up Duo Two-Factor Authentication

In order to register for orientation, students (not parents or family members) must enroll in Duo two-factor authentication. You will be prompted to enroll in DUO the first time you sign in to ANY Miami resource after confirming admission. The easiest method for using DUO is a smartphone app (but texts and phone calls are also permissible).
For more information about DUO, see our IT Knowledge Base or chat with a representative at  - MiamiOH.edu/itchat.
