Second-year On-campus Living Requirement

By now you may have heard MSU has extended the on-campus living requirement to include a second academic year, reinstating the two-year live-on requirement MSU had waived since the 1980s.

The reinstatement begins this fall with you, our incoming class! Research shows living on campus has direct benefit to Spartans, especially our second-year students. Living on gives you greater access to resources and activities that correlate with your academic success. This access supports you in graduating more quickly, keeping the cost of your degree lower (for example, less student loan debt, fewer living expenses).

Additionally, Live On has developed programs specifically focused on the first- and second-year student experience. These programs, along with the many resources available to you on campus, are intended to support you throughout your college career as you create your unique path to graduation.

Check out this video for more details on the two-year live-on reinstatement, or read this article on MSU Today.

Implementation
The second-year live-on requirement begins with the first-year entering class of fall 2021, who will then live on campus for a second academic year beginning fall 2022. Students who transfer to MSU will continue to be required to live on campus unless they meet the exception criteria.

Exception criteria for second-year students is being finalized, along with the request process. The current exception criteria and process is available on the MSU Student Life website.
