Dear Community,
I spend a lot of time thinking about who's missing from monuments and memorials. I was reflecting on this this Memorial Day, especially since we are experiencing so many people’s histories and perspectives being stripped away – women’s rights, reproductive rights, trans rights. How can we use monuments and memorials in a new way? This was much of my thinking when I created DENDROFEOMONOLOGY, the feminist history tree ring, last summer. And it’s the driving force behind an exciting new project we have in the works for this fall. Stay tuned.
Ken has a great new op-ed about AI published on the front page of The Boston Globe today. His op-ed "AI's Creative Upside" is an important perspective that challenges all the fear and panic around this issue. Read in The Globe here, or on the PDF here.
I’m also heading to NYC mid-June to speak at the Tribeca Film Festival about AI, Chat GPT, and creativity and filmmaking. Tribeca has such a great lineup of films, events and talks. Check it all out here.
While in New York, I can't wait to see the MoMA art show Signals: How Video Transformed the World. Any other recommendations of great art shows in NYC, please let me know.
We’re deep in the creative soil working on all the above, as well as the new Getty initiative PST: Art & Science Collide at the Skirball Cultural Center in LA, and a new short film. I am loving wrestling with these ideas in different mediums.
One of my lightbox artworks will be auctioned for the Headland Center for the Arts, where I was artist-in-residence over a decade ago. I'm so happy to support their work creating space for artists to develop new ideas. The auction is online now at Artsy and at their big event on June 6 here.
In this month's newsletter that I am calling May (literally sent at the very end), art shows, books, podcasts, and articles to check out.
Here's to reflecting, rethinking, regenerating,
xo,
