WARM HEARTH BOARD OF DIRECTORS NAMES NEW PRESIDENT & CEO
After a lengthy search process, Edward Spencer, Chairman of the Warm Hearth, Inc. Board of Directors, has announced that Brad Dalton will take over as President & CEO for the Blacksburg-based senior living community this fall.  Dalton is currently the Regional Vice President of Operations for American Health Care (AHC) in Roanoke.  He brings with him a breadth of experience that spans nearly 20 years, 12 of those with AHC.  Dalton will take over for retiring CEO, Ferne Moschella.

In a unique twist, thanks to COVID-19, interviews were conducted via Zoom and employees and residents of the village were invited to weigh in on the top three candidates.  After viewing each session, surveys were provided and the board’s search committee read the feedback with interest.

Dalton is a native of Dublin and a graduate of Radford University where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration Degree; he later earned his M.B.A. from Spring Arbor University. He and his wife and two children currently reside in Roanoke.  When asked about his thoughts as he looks ahead to his new role, Dalton said, “I am honored to serve and lead Warm Hearth Village as the next President and CEO. The more I learn about the history of Warm Hearth Village, especially the amazing vision of founders Wybe and Marietje Kroontje, the more excited I become. When I read and learn about the 100-year plan the Kroontjes created, I can't help but feel lucky to have a part in their plan. I have been serving seniors across the Commonwealth for the last 12 years, so coming back closer to home to serve the senior community in the New River Valley is really special. I will work hard to bring fresh ideas and continued vision to the Kroontje's plan, building upon the great success that retiring President & CEO, Ferne Moschella achieved during her 20 years of leadership."
FERNE MOSCHELLA RECEIVES VISION AWARD FROM LEADINGAGE VIRGINIA
Ferne Moschella, President & CEO of Warm Hearth Village was honored with the 2020 LeadingAge Virginia Vision Award in July. Warm Hearth team members surprised her with a special video presentation of the award, which you can see here. The Vision Award recognizes a nonprofit leader who embodies innovation, guides quality care and services for seniors in the present, but is not content to simply wait for the future. They instead strive to shape it. After 20 years of being a true visionary for Warm Hearth Village, we all know what a wonderful world it is with Ferne Moschella in it.

LISTENING CIRCLES - STEP ONE

Warm Hearth staff participated in several diversity listening circles last week facilitated by Dr. Sharon Blackwell Jones, Assistant Professor in Radford University's Counselor Education Department. The goal for the listening circles is to encourage sharing and awareness among people who work together and come from diverse backgrounds.  It is a facilitated forum designed to open the lines of communication for ongoing discussion and dialogue. Part of a multi-phase opportunity for employees, it will be followed by workshops where Jones will work with participants to further explore and appreciate our differences.

STUDENT PROJECT WINS DESIGN SOCIETY AWARD

Each fall, Virginia Tech's Industrial Design Department Senior Living Studio class meets with our residents to learn how they can engineer changes to everyday objects or design new ones that make life more livable for seniors. Loring Bixler, a retired IBM industrial designer and Warm Hearth Village resident, guided the students who came up with a product called Enrich.

Enrich is a community greenhouse pod designed to be put in communities to forge a lasting human connection and bridge generational gaps. Enrich recently won the Design Society Award at the European Product Design Awards. Congratulations to the Virginia Tech Industrial Design students on this great achievement!

Falls can result in hip fractures, broken bones, and head injuries. And even falls without a major injury can cause an older adult to become fearful or depressed, making it difficult for them to stay active. Some fall risks Warm Hearth at Home clinicians assess are: Loss of balance, changed gait mechanics, medications that cause dizziness or dehydration, loss of vision, and any chronic conditions that can lead to a fall. Through a thorough review of the home environment, other factors may be identified.

How can Warm Hearth at Home help?
  • We can provide medication oversight and strategies for organizing medications.
  • We perform a comprehensive health assessment, including evaluation of fall risk.
  • Individualized plans of care can use creative methods to help clients stay active and build strength and balance.
  • We have unique expertise in caring for and helping clients and their families to manage chronic conditions.

VIRGINIA TECH LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE

To keep everyone safe, LLI programs for Fall term 2020 will be conducted by Zoom. You can participate in using a variety of devices including a phone, but your best experience will be to use a computer, laptop, or tablet/iPad so that you can see other members in the class and presentation materials. Most classes will still offer an opportunity to enjoy the interaction with your instructor and other class members, something we have all treasured in our LLI learning experiences.
