Grant Finance Essentials: Planning, Pitfalls, and Practical Tips |
A collaboration between CAFE and ORS
|
Grant budgets can be stressful, mostly because there are processes and procedures that we don't know. Join this 3-part workshop series to demystify the financial side of grant applications. From decoding F&A and fringe rates to avoiding common budgeting blunders, this workshop will give you the tools and confidence to maximize your funding potential. Whether you're new to grant writing or looking to fine-tune your financial savvy, learn how to craft a budget that doesn't just work—it's built to win.
CAFE and the Office of Research Services (ORS) Pre-Award are collaborating to help PIs with budgets. Join us online for one, two, or all three workshops, facilitated by Alexis Petri, Lee Braden, Lora Owens, and Christopher Short.
Session 1 | Oct. 7, 2:00-3:00 PM: We'll focus on defining Facilities & Administrative (F&A) costs and fringe rates, covering key budgeting principles and the ORS budget template.
Session 2 | Nov. 12, 2:00-3:00PM: Learn strategies to avoid common budget mistakes and prepare stronger grant proposals.
Session 3 (Jan. 14, 2025, 2:00-3:00 PM: Plan your budget to fund your work, manage award budgets, and understand PI grant reports.

Designing Writing Assignments for Maximum Learning |
Join Marcus Meade at CAFE and online on October 23rd from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM for a hybrid workshop on creating effective writing assignments!
Writing projects are not just opportunities for students to perform competence. They're also sites of learning that allow students to practice skills and habits of mind associated with course outcomes. This workshop will focus on developing writing assignments as sites of learning and center principles of good writing pedagogy to help make assignment design more effective and efficient for faculty.

UMKC’s Disability Alliance is hosting its annual Disability Week from October 14-17, featuring art exhibits, performances, panel discussions, and workshops that celebrate disability experiences. This year's event is in partnership with MU Extension’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Council and UMKC’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
