FTC Report on Pet Medications Industry Finds Veterinarians Face Increasing Competition from Non-Veterinary Retail Outlets
A Federal Trade Commission report on the pet medications industry noted fast growth and a changing landscape of suppliers – with veterinarians seeing increased competition from non-traditional sellers, and consumers finding more ways to buy medications for their pets. The report made recommendations for ways to make the pet medications market even more competitive.  Read more...

FDA Regulation to Help Ensure Judicious Use of Antibiotics in Food-producing Animals
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) final rule, an important piece of the agency’s overall strategy to promote the judicious use of antimicrobials in food-producing animals. This strategy will bring the use of these drugs under veterinary supervision so that they are used only when necessary for assuring animal health.  Read more...
Governor Signs Animal Abuser Registration into Law
Tennessee is the first state to pass legislation to create an online registry of those who have been convicted of certain animal-cruelty offenses, including animal fighting.  A public website will be available beginning January 1, 2016, listing offenders' names and photographs.  Animal abusers will stay on the registry for two years for their first conviction and for five years upon their second offense.

The ongoing highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 outbreak has been devastating to the U.S. poultry industry and is one of the most costly national animal health disasters on record. While this particular disease incident affects poultry, we all know that there are disease risks that could just as easily devastate other livestock sectors.  I want to assure you that we at the Tennessee Department of Agriculture are monitoring the situation and doing everything we can to prepare for the likelihood that this poultry disease is detected here in our state.  Read more...

Obituary
Jerry Allen Truitt, DVM
Dr. Truitt passed away June 7, 2015, in Memphis, Tennessee after fighting a three year battle with cancer. He was born February 2, 1941 in Crittenden County Kentucky and raised in Owensboro, Kentucky.  After graduating with his DVM degree from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1966, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force as a Base Veterinarian from 1966-1968 and practiced veterinary medicine in Shelby County for 46 years.  Read more...
