CONNECTIONS WITH CITIZENS AND COMMUNITIES KEY TO TRUST IN JOURNALISM
An SMPA panel of experts on politics and journalism discussed how to build connections with the American people and reinforce civil discourse.
The event coincided with the release of a massive new Pew Research Center survey of 35,000 Americans' opinions of local news and came exactly one month ahead of the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner.

A TRAILBLAZING BLACK JOURNALIST
Dorothy Butler Gilliam, a former SMPA fellow and director of the GW Prime Movers program, discussed her book, “Trailblazer,” and her reporting career that included being the first black female journalist hired by The Washington Post.

The Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication (IPDGC) is offering a grant of up to $5,000 to a promising student for a project in public diplomacy.

BETTY ENDICOTT SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS DUE
The Betty Endicott Scholarship is available to sophomores, juniors or seniors with a declared major in communication or journalism and a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Robert Entman co-presented “Framing in a Fractured Paradigm: Impacts of Digital Technology on Ideology, Power and International Affairs” at the International Studies Association Convention in Toronto, Canada.
Steven Livingston chaired the International Studies Association Convention panel “Strategic Narratives and Frame Contestation: Unifying a Fractured Paradigm” where he co-presented on “Inverting Cascades: Network Framing Contestation Following Chemical Weapons Attacks in Syria” with Jack Nassetta, B.A. '20. He also co-presented on “Systematic Disinformation and the Malicious Use of Artificial Intelligence in Conflict‐Fragile States” at the 60th annual event held in Toronto, Canada.
Frank Sesno joined CGTN America for the segment The Heat: Mueller report issued in US-Russia investigation.
Cheryl W. Thompson gave the presentation "Policing the Police" at the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism.
Silvio Waisbord authored the Clarin (Argentina) article “La pesadilla del racismo digital” about online hate speech and the responsibility of social media platforms on combating digital racism.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Chris Evans, B.A. ‘16, is working as communications director on the 2020 campaign Beto for President. Previously, Evans was communications director on the Senate campaign Beto for Texas. Evans held a White House internship while at GW and graduated summa cum laude from SMPA with special honors in political communication.
