Welcome to the April edition of the Warrior Family Association e-newsletter. The spring semester is almost over, and soon our graduates will be walking across the stage at our May 11 commencement ceremony. It’s almost time for me to get tissues ready to wipe away tears as I shake the hands and give hugs to our students as they walk down from the stage. If you are attending graduation for your student, please see me so I can congratulate you. Our students get to this day with a lot of love and support from you – and I want to recognize your accomplishment, too! Enjoy the spring season, and best of luck to your student for the rest of this semester!
If your student is graduating in May, please be sure to look at the “important end-of-the-year dates” section of this newsletter below for the schedule. Please also check out our commencement web page to learn more about this year’s speaker and to read other important information about the day. Also, check out this classic video from Commencement 2018 when we told the story of updating Indiana Tech’s Alma Mater!

Cyber Warriors will vie for national championship
On April 25 through 27, Indiana Tech’s cyber defense team, the Cyber Warriors, will compete in the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition.
The Cyber Warriors became one of nine teams to earn a berth in the competition when it won the Midwest Regional in March and its its 10th straight Indiana Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in January. In all, the Cyber Warriors have won 17 state titles, besting over the years universities that have included Purdue-West Lafayette, Indiana-Bloomington, Rose-Hulman and Vincennes.
In these competitions, cybersecurity teams work to combat attempted network security breaches and related challenges that test their problem-solving, technical abilities and teamwork at every turn. Check indianatech.edu after the event to see how the Cyber Warriors fared at nationals.

Final thoughts from a fellow mom
Last month over spring break, Karl and I enjoyed a nine-day trip to visit with alumni and our athletic teams who were competing across the country. We started in Jamestown, North Dakota, to attend the NAIA national tournament for women’s wrestling. Attending a wrestling tournament was a first for us, and we ended the second day with a dinner with the team and their families. We then traveled to Melbourne, Florida, where our women’s softball team was playing in a Spring Break tournament. They won both games that day, and we were able to spend quality time with the athletes and their families that evening. We spent the next few days in Florida visiting with alumni and donors, and ended the week in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, to watch our women’s basketball team play in the first two rounds of the NAIA national tournament. Our team won both games, and the second one was particularly challenging as we played against the host team in front of their loud and raucous home crowd. The enthusiasm of our students, their families, and our alumni gives both Karl and me a lot of inspiration and energy. We recognize the great privilege we have to enjoy these experiences and opportunities in support of our students.
A couple of weeks ago, on the Friday before Easter, Karl and I took another trip to go back east to help our son, Thomas, move into a new apartment. We pulled a trailer filled with items for Thomas’s new apartment on an agonizing thirteen-hour journey, at a maximum speed of 58 mph, all the way to West New York, New Jersey. Thomas had been looking for a new place to live for a while, and since rent in Manhattan is outrageous, he decided to cross the Hudson River into New Jersey to find something more affordable. His new place is beautiful, and he takes the ferry to Manhattan, along with a short scooter ride, to get to work and to his classes at Columbia. The apartment complex he moved to has a swimming pool, fire pits, grills, and a game room. I might want to vacation there! I do feel relieved he found a nice, safe place to live. We were able to end our trip by spending Easter with our parents and siblings before returning to Fort Wayne. I hope that this spring season of renewal brings you the opportunity to start something new like Thomas was able to! Wishing you, your student, and your family all the best!
