Fonts and Formatting FTW*

Let your message take center stage for all your audiences

Good formatting isn't just about accessibility. It's about reducing cognitive load.

  • Stick to a sans serif font, like Arial, Helvetica, or Barlow Semi Condensed (a Stony Brook brand font), throughout your content.
  • Use two font families at the most. Too many styles (bold, italics, underlines, and different typefaces) create "visual noise."
  • Keep your text left-aligned.
  • Avoid using all caps. They make you sound like you're YELLING. And they can be hard to read.
  • Organize your content: Use lists and try to keep your paragraphs short. White space wants to be your friend.
