New Open-Source E-Book From C-GEO |
Teaching Through Rather than About: Analyzing Black Histories and Geographies with Primary Sources is a free E-book published by OpenOregon Pressbooks.
The book’s origins stem from a series of C-GEO workshops and includes 11 secondary chapters that model lessons on teaching Black histories and geographies. Each lesson chapter explores teaching through Black histories rather than about black histories by utilizing a Black Historical Consciousness framework. The chapters also all include completed lesson plans and the lesson narrative, which provides the essential and supporting questions, featured sources, and performance tasks. The chapters conclude with ways activities can be adapted or extended and will reiterate how they are teaching through rather than about Black histories for this topic and why this is important.

This issue’s feature is about C-GEO TC Morgan Crawford |
|
|
Morgan Crawford in Norway during the C-GEO Summer 2025 Institute.
|
|
My name is Morgan Crawford, and I am in my 7th year of teaching at Perrydale HS. Just like any small school, our teachers here wear many hats and that has given me the opportunity to advise Leadership and Yearbook in addition to the 9th-12th English Language Arts classes that I teach. Over the years, I have spent time building up my curriculum to include as many culturally relevant texts as possible. I find so much joy in helping students interact, relate to, question, and understand the texts we read.

What has drawn you to geography education? How are you promoting geography in the classroom? |
Admittedly, I had never been great with Geography throughout my own education journey. I used to stray away out of fear of what I "didn't know". Now, I see adding elements of Geography education into my lessons as an integral part in bridging the gap between Literature and other disciplines. I spend time studying and working with peers to gain the knowledge that I need to add vital information to my curriculum. Specifically, using the 5 Themes of Geography within background for literary texts and movements has been such a great way to help students grasp the historical context of our materials.

What have you enjoyed about CGEO? |
Beyond the trips and cultures, I have been able to experience with C-GEO, this organization has given me the confidence to be able to teach and promote Geography within the English Discipline. Getting close to other educators, through trips and sharing lessons, has been such an unexpected benefit of my time in this organization.
