New Student Convocation
More than 550 students and their families braved the elements Tuesday to attend the 12th annual New Student Convocation. Chancellor Daniel Little greeted the crowd, saying, "We are privileged to have you join this community of learners. You will help us be a richer and more satisfying place."
In his first address as University of Michigan's newly inaugurated president, Mark S. Schlissel on Friday declared a central tenet of the university must be "to seek out, encourage and value all voices."
Thomaz Carvalhaes grew up in Toronto, where subways and buses helped transport people on a daily basis. This summer the environmental science student teamed up with Focus: HOPE to help improve access to public transportation in Detroit. 
The 2013-2014 Year in Review will arrive in faculty and staff mailboxes this week. The annual publication features the work of UM-Dearborn faculty, staff and students on campus and throughout the region.

UM-Dearborn recently was ranked 14th nationally and 8th among master's universities in Washington Monthly's annual "Best Bank for the Buck" listings. The publication measured universities' access, affordability and student outcomes to determine the rankings.
Discretionary Community Engagement Funds now are available. Plus, learn more about next semester's Poverty Simulation and Public Allies Metro Detroit's graduation ceremony. 
The Early Childhood Education Center has received a competitive grant for the Michigan Department of Education’s Great Start Readiness Program. The grant, totaling $217,500, will pay tuition costs for 60 children to attend the ECEC during the 2014-2015 school year. Program spots are available.
