SEPTEMBER 2023

FROM THE PARENT PROGRAM DIRECTOR

On campus we are starting to see signs of fall. Cooler temperatures are here, and the students are taking advantage of the great outdoors. Hopefully, your student has adjusted to their college schedule and new rhythm of life on campus.
Every Monday students receive an email called “Have you Herd?” It is filled with information for students on upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, groups to be involved in and more. As your student is trying to find their people and things to be involved in, continue to encourage them to take that first step of trying something new. Thank you for choosing Lipscomb to be a part of your student’s journey.
Go Bisons!

Director of Parent Engagement

On the first Tuesday of each month, the parent program hosts a monthly prayer Zoom for our Lipscomb families. The October Zoom begins at 10:55 a.m. CT on Oct. 3.
This is a great moment for all Bisons near and far to come together to talk and pray at the same time our students are in chapel. Dr. Jeff Cline joins us in October to share an encouraging message and pray over our families. Jeff is a current parent to a freshman student, a Christian counselor in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and an online faculty member for the School of Counseling at Colorado Christian University.

BISONS WEEKEND

We hope you have plans to come to Bisons Weekend Nov. 9-11! Special parent events include Parents Lunch and Learn, Athletes Parent Dinner, Chapel, Pancakes with the President, Parent tent at Bison Square Fair, BisonTalks, "Big Fish" performance and several athletic games. Would you like more information? Click here for all the details!

FINANCIAL AID

2024-25 FAFSA to be available at later date
Typically, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has been available beginning Oct. 1. However, because of significant changes to the application, the 2024-2025 FAFSA will not be available until later this year. Please keep an eye out in parent news and studentaid.gov for updates.

CAMPUS NEWS

Education students attend orientation
The College of Education faculty and staff welcomed 22 undergraduate students to the Teacher Education Orientation in August. The cohort of students is currently working with Dr. Kristin Baese (’07) in their introductory education course, Schooling in America.
As a part of the orientation program, students heard from a panel of faculty members about their experiences in P-12 education and learned more about the requirements to become a licensed teacher. The College of Education is excited about the opportunity to support this group of teacher candidates as they pursue a career in education.

OFFICE OF SPIRITUAL FORMATION

Herd in Prayer
Our community is built on and sustained by prayer. That’s why each year we pray over every member of our community by name during On the First Day We Pray. That’s also why Lipscomb's Office of Spiritual Formation has begun publishing “Herd in Prayer,” a calendar with daily prompts to cover our community in specific prayers. Herd in Prayer will be published each month and shared in various ways with our community. We hope you will join us by downloading the calendar
Gathering
This fall, The Gathering's theme is The Beatitudes. Each week, a featured speaker will share about one of the "blessed" statements spoken by Jesus, and we will consider together what it means to live a Kingdom life that is truly blessed.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER

Handshake helps students look for job opportunities
This month the Career Development Center is educating students about Handshake and encouraging them to set up their profiles. Handshake is a platform that allows students to connect with employers and look for work opportunities according to their location and industry preferences. In addition to opportunities on Handshake, each student has received an email from us with job and internship postings tailored to their academic discipline.

The Career Development Center will co-host four workshops this semester that are open to all students. They will cover topics like vocational discovery and calling, resume writing, interviewing and LinkedIn. If you’d like to keep up to date on what’s happening in the Career Development Center, follow us on Instagram @careerdev_lipscomb.
