Apply for Creativity & Culture in Rome by Feb. 16: The program focuses on helping students develop the ability to immerse, observe, understand and connect with people and culture in context. In addition to structured, ethnographic exploration, the program includes a series of collaborative group intensive creative workshops. The program is open to all undergraduate and graduate students sophomore level and above with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Apply online here.
The KU Bremner Editing Center has opened applications for the second annual Iles Award for Research in Editing. This award of $1,000 is intended to support research pertaining to the teaching or practice of editing written language. Faculty, graduate students, independent scholars and corporate/industry researchers are welcome to apply for the award; projects may involve editing of any professional written content. Deadline for submissions is April 15, 2025. Full eligibility and application information is available here.
Volunteer with Hawks for Health: Training is self-paced and volunteer shifts are based entirely on your schedule. Volunteers will assist the local Lawrence community with filling out applications for SNAP food benefits and Housing assistance at the Lawrence Public Library. Volunteering starts on Feb. 10, but anyone can join at any time. Fill out this form if you’re interested.
University Daily Kansan hiring newsletter editor: The University Daily Kansan has refreshed its semi-weekly newsletter, “Catching Up with the Kansan,” and is now accepting applications for the Newsletter Editor position.
This role consists of curating an informative column that highlights the Kansan’s daily content every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning. We encourage passionate storytellers to create a mock-up newsletter via Google Doc to submit by Feb. 7 at 4 p.m. All submissions should be sent to this form. Subscribe to “Catching Up with the Kansan” to get an idea of what our refreshed newsletter looks and sounds like.
Feb. 15 deadline for Kansas Association of Broadcasters student awards: The Kansas Association of Broadcasters is accepting entries for the 2025 Student Broadcast Excellence Awards through Feb. 15. Enter here. Submit your video to Cal Butcher by the end of the day Feb. 6 if you are entering a category.
Study Abroad: Come join the fun in Stirling, Scotland this summer through the Study Abroad Program. Take a sports media course through KU and an additional, unique course through the University of Stirling. The four-week course runs from June 7 to July 5. The Center for Excellence in Health Communication to Underserved Populations (CEHCUP) partners in two funded projects focused on the health and social reintegration of older women with Criminal Legal System involvement. CEHCUP will develop the digital tools, produce the mediated content for the interventions, and provide know-how and support for the research component of these projects.
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas attended a lunch-and-learn session at Innovation Park on Jan. 30. Patent attorney Tom Luebbering (Hovey Williams) gave a presentation on "Who Owns AI-Derived Work?" Key takeaways include the need to document and disclose in patent applications any assistance from artificial intelligence and the Copyright Office's current policy of not registering copyrights in AI-assisted works.
Career and Outreach Coordinator Steve Rottinghaus judged sports and entertainment management at the Future Business Leaders of America District VI Conference on Jan. 29 in Topeka.
The Dana Program for Neuroscience and Society at Loyola University Chicago is inviting undergraduate student-produced journalistic stories related to neuroscience for submission to its journalism competition.This allows students to dive into one of the fastest-growing STEM fields and compete for a cash award and an invitation to a ceremony in the fall covered by the program. They are looking for print stories of 1,200-1,500 words, and the due date is May 15.

Pizza and Politics in the Union: Join Lecturer Eric Thomas and Misty Heggeness, associate professor in the KU School of Public Affairs and Administration, for Pizza and Politics on Feb. 7 from 12-1 p.m. in Jayhawk Ink in the Kansas Union. All KU students are invited to learn about the evolving role of the wealthy in politics.
Dole hosts pair of events: The Dole Institute’s Student Advisory Board (SAB) will be holding its first meeting of the semester on Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m.. It will cover upcoming events, volunteering opportunities and more. Stick around afterwards for Valentine’s Day-themed crafts and snacks. Feb. 5 will feature its first Ft. Leavenworth event of the semester, titled “G-Planes, R-Planes, and Zeppelins: Germany’s Strategic Bombing Campaign in the First World War” and featuring Professor of Military History Dr. Tom Hanson. The event will be at the Dole Institute at 3 p.m. at 2350 Petefish Dr.

Hall Center for Humanities hosting lecture: Lisa Damour will address popular misconceptions about how women speak on Wednesday, Feb 12 at the Lied Center Pavilion. Damour is the author of three New York Times best sellers: Untangled, Under Pressure, and The Emotional Lives of Teenagers. More information is available here.

Work for the Eudora Times: The Eudora Times is looking for a summer reporter interested in covering general assignment stories, taking photos and improving video skills. The Times is an award-winning, nationally recognized online newspaper based in the KU School of Journalism and Mass Communications with a commitment to community engagement.

The summer reporter will get substantial real-world experience covering a community of 6,500 that relies on the Times for local news. The town is about 15 minutes from campus, so the summer reporter can remain based in Lawrence. The 10-week internship will pay $5,000, and you can expect to work 36-40 hours per week. Applicants should have completed JMC 415 Multimedia Reporting by the end of the spring semester.
