From the Office of the Dean |

Welcome to our third CHDCM newsletter of the Fall 2024 semester—and with it, the official start of a new season! I hope that you’re enjoying these first few days of fall, and all that this season brings…for me, it means the return of the NFL, and signs of cooler weather ahead!
This time of year also brings with it a whole series of celebrations, at Seton Hall and in our College specifically. Last week, for example, I was able to celebrate the tenure and promotion of two of our faculty, Dr. Branden Buehler and Prof. Christine Lhowe. This is an amazing milestone in academic life, and I was proud to congratulate them publicly on all that they’ve accomplished so far here at SHU. In addition, at Faculty Convocation I was able to help celebrate the arrival of our fantastic new faculty: Dr. David Backer (joining ELMP in Spring 2025), Dr. David Berman (COMA), Dr. James Corino (a longtime ELMP administrator, now welcomed onto the faculty), Dr. M. Hayden (an alum of COMA, now returning to SHU as a faculty member), Dr. Kishon Hickman (moving into a new faculty role in ELMP), and Dr. Sooji Kim (ELMP). If you haven’t yet had a chance to welcome them, do so when you next cross their paths!
This point in the semester also brings with it our amazing CHDCM Welcome Convocation—one of the highlights of the fall for me! I want to thank everyone who joined us for the fun last Thursday, which included a welcome to our newest community members, the premiere of our 2023-24 highlight video, the Pirate leading our departmental pep rally, and an amazing lunch—complete with coffee bar and the famous Scream Trucks! I absolutely love this event, and so I appreciated the energy and enthusiasm everyone brought to the day. Special thanks to our student singer, Adriana Ceciliano, accompanied by our own Dr. Dena Levine, and to our CHDCM planning team: Omayra Arocho, Sherry Mahfouz, Brittany Scoles, Jeronimo Valcarcel, and our amazing CHDCM Graduate Assistants. It was a truly perfect day, and that’s because of the work that all of you put into making it the fitting kickoff for the CHDCM community’s next year together! Thanks again to all who joined us, and see you at our next Convocation in March…
With that, though, I’ll close off my part of this newsletter and let you get to the good stuff! There’s a lot to check out in the stories below about the members of our CHDCM community….so read on! As always, keep your good news and event notes coming, and I look forward to seeing you all around campus in the coming days and weeks…

Student Organization Highlight
The Best Buddies National Organization is a nonprofit dedicated to creating opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to form meaningful friendships, gain employment, and become more socially integrated within their communities.
Students in Seton Hall’s Chapter will practice their mentorship roles, establish new friendships, and advocate inclusion for students with IDDs which will bring awareness and education to their peers. This opportunity will expose members to the incredible individuality and talents that students with IDDs possess; additionally, it will inspire passion in their advocacy work and a desire to continue this work long after their time with our club has ended.

Best Buddies at Seton Hall is open to all students! Follow and learn more on Instagram @shu.bestbuddies.

Chad J. Larsen is a graduate student who is about halfway done with his pursuit of a master’s degree in psychological studies, with a concentration in sport and exercise psychology. He expects to complete this program in May of 2025. Chad also attended the University to earn his bachelor’s degree in honors psychology, graduating Magna Cum Laude in May of 2023. As part of the undergraduate honors psychology program, Chad conducted independent research under professional guidance on the role of motivation in the exercise habits of college students. He then successfully presented these findings in front of fellow peers and professionals at the Petersheim Academic Conference in 2023.
Earlier this year in February, Chad was a speaker at the 2024 AASP Mid-Atlantic Regional Sport Psychology Conference. He conducted a poster presentation regarding current research findings on conflicts of interest in sport psychology. Here, he educated professionals in sport psychology about the dangers of conflicts of interest. Currently, Chad works with and speaks to middle school athletes, educating them on sport psychology and providing them with the tools and strategies necessary to help their mental performance take their physical performance to the next level. He hopes to become a mental performance coach/specialist or a sport psychologist for a professional sports team in the future. Chad is now in his sixth year of studying psychology and he has enjoyed every second of it!
