Kathrin Durizzo, PhD, joined GHP on February 1 as a postdoctoral researcher working with Stéphane Verguet. Kathrin’s research focuses on the development of inclusive, sustainable, and resilient health systems in sub-Saharan Africa. Most recently, she has been working on addressing key challenges to achieving universal health coverage, including improving access to care, improving health insurance processing, and expanding coverage of essential health services by measuring the impact of policy interventions. Richmond Owusu, PhD, joined GHP on February 1 as a visiting scientist working with Stéphane Verguet. Richmond is an international health economics and policy consultant and faculty at the School of Public Health, University of Ghana. His current research focuses on cost analysis, economic and impact evaluations of population health, immunization economics, health financing, and the economic burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases. He seeks to support resource-constrained health systems to optimize their limited health care resources and improve population health outcomes. After a decade of service at the Harvard Chan School, Elizabeth (Betsy) Osborn is leaving GHP to be the education director of the Pathogen Genomics Center of Excellence at Harvard Medical School (HMS). Betsy will lead a CDC-sponsored effort to design and deliver online training in pathogen genomics for the U.S. public health workforce, working with senior scientists from the Broad Institute, HMS leadership of the Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness, and the talented production team of HMX. Betsy says she will miss the global focus and dedication of her GHP colleagues and is glad to be nearby on the HMS campus. Please join us in wishing Betsy all the best in her new position!

Aya Goto Hosts Visiting Professors from Japan

Professor and Vice Dean Chichaya Koriyama, MD, PhD, MPH '98, of Kagoshima University; Satoko Okabe, RN, RD, PhD, of Koriyama Women’s University; and Michio Murakami, PhD, of Osaka University visited Boston this past week to work with Professor of the Practice of International Community Health Aya Goto. Aya leads a participatory school health project, Creative Health, in five disaster-prone countries (Japan, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Rwanda), funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The Creative Health project produces fun health education materials and activities. During their visit, the professors conducted three seminars for master's students, Takemi Fellows, and Japanese scholars in the Harvard community. These events included a Japanese food seminar in collaboration with the Student Club of Japan, in which the Fellows and students enjoyed making colorful rice sandwiches.

The Africa Health Conference, presented by the Harvard Chan Africa Health Students Forum, is an annual event that brings together experts, researchers, practitioners, and students from across the world to discuss and explore pressing health challenges in Africa. This year’s event will explore the theme “Mapping Changemakers Transforming Health in Africa.”

Karen Zeribi is the founder of Shift, a collaborative improvement organization dedicated to accelerating social change, and Katie Donohue McMillan is the CEO and founder of Well Made Health, LLC, a digital health company founded in 2020. Karen and Katie will share their experiences working in public health entrepreneurship and hold a Q&A with attendees.

Global Recommendations for Small Vulnerable Newborn Feeding: Moving Recommendations to Research and Practice

Join the Nutrition and Global Health Program for their next monthly seminar! Katherine Semrau, PhD, MPH, and Linda Vesel, PhD, MPH, will present the current challenges, global recommendations, and research priorities related to the feeding of small vulnerable newborns in low-resource settings. Katherine Semrau is the director of the BetterBirth Program at Ariadne Labs and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School. Linda Vesel is the scientific lead at the BetterBirth Program and a senior research scientist at Harvard Chan School.

Call for Abstracts: 16th Arab Conference at Harvard (ACH) Research Symposium on Healthcare
The ACH24 Research Symposium, part of the larger Arab Conference, is a collaborative platform for celebrating and sharing research focused on the Arab world or conducted by Arab students. This year, the symposium, themed “Bringing Best Healthcare Practices Back,” emphasizes addressing health equity. The deadline for abstract submissions is February 28, 2024, and participants will be notified of acceptance by March 14, 2024. Please reach out to Heba Mohamed with any questions.

The Trinity Challenge to Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance in Low- and Middle-Income CountriesA new innovation competition with a grand prize of up to £1 million is currently accepting submissions. The Trinity Challenge on Antimicrobial Resistance is specifically calling for data-driven solutions focused on low- and middle-income countries to help mitigate the global crisis of antimicrobial resistance. The Challenge was launched with a webinar featuring tips and discussion from the Trinity Challenge team and their partners MIT Solve, plus questions from participants on topics like the Challenge’s community data focus and the application process. HGHI Burke Global Health Fellowship
The Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI) has opened applications for the 2024–2025 HGHI Burke Global Health Fellowship for junior faculty members across the University. There are two categories of awards. The research award provides $75,000 to conduct foundational research that prepares the junior faculty member to be an independent investigator or conduct exploratory work on groundbreaking questions seldom supported by traditional funding sources. The curriculum development and teaching award provides $25,000 to apply innovative pedagogy to course development and teaching, particularly at the undergraduate level. All application materials are due by 5 pm on March 8, 2024. More information can be found on the HGHI Burke Fellowship website.

International Health Systems Program Course: Strengthening Human Resources for Health
This in-person, one-week program offers the necessary tools and skills to understand, assess, and formulate effective strategies aimed at enhancing human resources for health. Throughout the course, which will take place from May 1 to 7, 2024, participants will craft a strategic plan for human resources and crisis management tailored to their country or organization's needs. Addressing the critical need for skilled health workers across all levels and the strengthening of educational and management systems, this course employs a financial perspective to achieve these objectives.
