Travel checklist: documents to carry

For F-1 and J-1 visa holders, it is very important to carry the right documents and to keep them with you when entering the U.S.
Essential immigration documents to pack in your carry-on (and not your checked luggage!) are:
  • Valid passport, with at least 6 months of validity* remaining
*Countries listed on the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) Travel page have an agreement with the U.S. that allows citizens to enter on a current passport up to the actual date of expiration.

  • Valid F-1 or J-1 visa (in passport)
Citizens of Canada and Bermuda passport are not required to have an F-1/J-1 visa—only the I-20/DS-2019 and valid passport is needed.

  • I-20 or DS-2019 (printed out and signed by the OIS and you)

  • Recommended but generally not required:
    • I-901 SEVIS fee receipt (printable from the I-901 fee website)
    • Proof of funding (i.e. financial aid award, bank statements, etc.)
    • Proof of enrollment (i.e. admissions offer, letter from Registrar, etc.)
Visit the OIS's Travel Checklist page anytime for up-to-date information and reminders.

Customs and Border Protection: what to expect when you land in the U.S.

Before you are permitted to enter the U.S. in F-1 or J-1 status, you will be required to pass through an inspection with Customs and Border Protection (CBP).  You should present the essential immigration and supporting documents listed above when engaging with CBP, and you can expect to answer some short questions about your study plans in the U.S.
Often, this inspection is brief, and you'll be admitted into the U.S. in F-1/J-1 status before collecting your luggage and leaving the airport (or, for some, boarding the next flight of your itinerary).  It is typical for the inspection and admission process to take anywhere from twenty to forty five minutes, depending on how busy the airport is.
Sometimes, a CBP officer will determine that they need to ask you a few further questions.  If you are brought to a waiting room and asked to take a seat until you are able to meet with another CBP officer, you have likely found yourself in "secondary inspection."  Stay calm, try to be patient, and answer all questions honestly and concisely when speaking with a CBP officer.  Experiences in secondary inspection can last from thirty minutes to a few hours depending on how long the wait is.  Don't panic, but do call us if you need us (see below).

    If something goes wrong 🚨

If you encounter any issues entering the U.S. in F-1 or J-1 status, reach out to the OIS:
    • whatsapp: +1-413-200-0864
    • phone: +1-413-542-5971
If you do not have a phone, you may request that a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent make a call for you.  The OIS is always happy to verify for a CBP official that you are a student of Amherst College and that we are expecting you.

This is rarely necessary, thankfully, but it is important that you know what to do if the unexpected happens.
