Note from our Office
Dear Calumet County 4‑H,
July is here, and with it comes one of the most exciting times of the 4‑H year - Fair season! Across the county, youth have been hard at work preparing their projects, and we are excited to see all their efforts come together in the weeks ahead.
Fair Entry is now open, and we encourage all members to complete their entries and ensure their projects are signed up for the fair. Taking time to double-check entries now helps everything run smoothly later and ensures youth are ready for judging.
To help everyone feel confident and prepared, a new resource is now available for parents, Club Leaders, and Project Leaders focused on supporting youth through advanced judging. This tool is a great way to better understand expectations and guide youth in showcasing not only their projects, but also their learning and growth throughout the year.
As youth put the finishing touches on their entries, here are a few helpful tips for success: - Review project requirements and judging guidelines ahead of time - Practice talking about your project—what you learned, challenges you faced, and skills you developed - Make sure exhibits are clean, complete, and labeled properly with your fair tags - Most importantly, come ready to share your story and take pride in your work
There are still openings in several Spark Workshops, along with additional project meetings happening throughout the summer. These opportunities are a great way for youth to continue learning, try something new, and connect with others who share their interests.
July is a busy and rewarding month, filled with hard work, learning, and celebration. Thank you to all our members, families, and volunteers for the time and dedication you bring to 4‑H. We look forward to seeing you at the fair and celebrating all that our youth have accomplished.
Here’s to a fun, successful, and memorable July!
Sincerely,
Carlea Lonergan

🎡 Calumet County Fair Entries Now Open!
🆕 New Resource to Help Youth Prepare for Judging
We’re excited to share a NEW resource designed to help families, Club Leaders, and Project Leaders better prepare youth for the judging experience. This guide includes: - Helpful tips for building confidence and communication skills - Practice questions youth may be asked during judging - Guidance for leaders and parents on how to support youth
📄 Access the new preparation resource here: https://calumet.extension.wisc.edu/files/2025/07/2025-4H-at-Fair-Booklet.pdf
Can’t Make It to Judging? Youth Can Still Participate! We know summer schedules can get busy, and sometimes judging dates may conflict with other important commitments like: - Sports practices or games - School starting (especially for Foods judging) - College students returning to campus
Good news—youth can still exhibit their projects even if they are unable to attend judging.
For example, Foods Judging often falls after school begins, which can make it difficult for some youth to be present. The new resource outlines how members can still enter and participate in these situations, ensuring they don’t miss out on showcasing their work.
Be sure to review the guide for details on how to navigate these situations and keep youth involved!
✅ Don’t Miss Out!
Take advantage of these tools and opportunities to help youth feel confident, prepared, and proud of their accomplishments at the Calumet County Fair.
If you have questions about entries or judging, please reach out—we’re here to help!

Calumet County 4‑H Attendance & Fair Participation Policy
Being a member of Calumet County 4‑H is about learning, having fun, and being part of a community. There is no attendance requirement just to be a member of 4‑H. You are always welcome to belong, participate, and learn at your own pace.
However, to exhibit at the Calumet County Fair as a 4‑H member—including participating in the Annual Foods Auction—there is an attendance requirement.
✅ Attendance Requirement for Fair Participation To be eligible to show at the county fair, members must attend at least one‑third (1/3) of their club’s meetings during the 4‑H year.
Up to 50% of meetings may be excused and will not count against your attendance. - Excused absences must be communicated before the meeting. - Each club decides who to contact to excuse a meeting (for example, the club leader).
Clubs may choose to set higher attendance expectations than the county minimum.
💚 Why This Matters Meetings help members learn, build skills, and stay connected to their club and community. Attending meetings shows your commitment to your project and to 4‑H—and helps make fair participation meaningful and fair for everyone.
If you have questions or worries about attendance, talk with your club leader early. We’re here to help you succeed!
