We're pleased to share that the new WashU Medicine Dermatology clinic in Sunset Hills is located at 3844 S. Lindbergh Blvd, Suite 240. Situated within the BJC Outpatient Center, the clinic offers general and pediatric dermatology, Mohs surgery, and aesthetic services.

Welcome to the latest edition of The DOM Insider,
As we prepare for the start of a new academic year, I am delighted to welcome more than 40 new faculty members, along with an outstanding group of residents and fellows, to the Department of Medicine. Their expertise, talent, and dedication strengthen our collective commitment to excellence in patient care, research, education, and service.
I am also proud to recognize several faculty members whose exceptional achievements have been honored with professorships. Congratulations to Drs. Elvin Geng, Sanjay Jain, Ifan Lodhi, Stephen Oh, William Powderly, and Rachel Presti for their outstanding contributions to impactful research, innovative discovery, and exemplary patient care.

In addition, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Robert E. Schwartz, MD, PhD, as the next Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, effective October 6, 2026. Dr. Schwartz currently serves as Professor of Medicine, Physiology, Biophysics, and Systems Biology at Weill Cornell Medicine and Professor of Biomedical Engineering (by courtesy) at Cornell University. He is also an Associate Attending Physician at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Schwartz to Washington University and to the leadership and expertise he will bring to our community.
This summer has also brought well-deserved recognition for our faculty. More than 170 Department of Medicine physicians were named to the 2026 Castle Connolly Top Doctors® list. This distinction reflects not only clinical excellence but also a deep commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care. Congratulations to all who received this honor.
In this issue of DOM Insider, we spotlight Barbara Trautner, MD, PhD, Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Trautner exemplifies the spirit of our department through her leadership, dedication to mentorship, commitment to research, and passion for patient care. She is building a strong sense of community while advancing scientific discovery and fostering the success of those around her.

Finding Purpose and Building Community: Dr. Barbara Trautner’s First Year at WashU Medicine |

When Dr. Barbara Trautner arrived at WashU Medicine a year ago to serve as Co-Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases, she was ready for a challenge. What she may not have expected was just how much she’d enjoy watching the leaves change color.
Coming from Houston, where seasons can feel more subtle,
Dr. Trautner admits that one of the unexpected joys of her move to St. Louis has been experiencing all four seasons in full force.

For 20 years, the WashU Medicine Diabetes Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital has provided comprehensive, patient-centered care for people living with diabetes while advancing education and research, embracing innovation, and expanding access to specialized treatment. Since opening in 2006, it has grown into a multidisciplinary program that brings together WashU Medicine and Barnes-Jewish endocrinologists, certified diabetes care and education specialists, nutritionists, nurses, foot care experts, and other health care professionals to deliver exceptional care that incorporates advanced technology and compassion.

Congratulations to the twenty-one WashU Medicine Faculty for being selected for Fall 2026 DOM Leadership Training Course (LTC). The course includes eight half-day sessions covering topics such as Self-Awareness/Managing Yourself, Systems Thinking, Managing Others, Conflict Management, Crucial Conversations, and Negotiations, and are led by Dr. Clay Dunagan, Denise Murphy, and Dr. Russell Hoffman.

The Department of Medicine hosted an Orientation for our new DOM fellows on July 6th. The new fellows enjoyed speakers Dr. Abby Spencer, Dr. Amy Reik, Dr. Angela Brown, Dr. Patricia Kao and Dr. John Schneider. During lunch the fellows were also able to visit tables for WUTPP, ICTS, WUMCHA, GME Wellness, HEaR Initiative to learn all about the wonderful resources available during their fellowships.

Faculty development pilot series has successful launch |
Feedback for Learning, Equity, & eXcellence (FLEX), a three-session faculty development pilot series at WashU Medicine, successfully graduated its first cohort this summer. FLEX is designed for faculty to engage in a unique, individually tailored approach to enhancing belonging, assessment, and delivering equitable feedback in the clinical learning environment. In Memoriam: Katherine Parker Ponder, MD |
|
|
|
The Department of Medicine is saddened to share the passing of Dr. Katherine Parker Ponder, who dedicated 24 years of service to WashU. Throughout her career, she made meaningful contributions as a faculty member in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics before joining the Department of Medicine's Division of Hematology.
|
Dr. Ponder succumbed to her breast cancer after a long battle that she approached with grace and tenacity. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Cum Laude from Stanford University. She completed medical school at Washington University in St. Louis.
