According to a CNN story that showed up in the Oregonian last week, when a drive-thru COVID-19 vaccine clinic in South Carolina got backed up, the mayor called in Jerry Walkowiak, the manager of a local fast food restaurant. "When I heard about it [significant delays caused by an overwhelmed computer system] I called Jerry and asked if he would come help us out," Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie told CNN. "After he looked it over, he said, 'There's your problem right there. It's backed up because you have one person checking people in.' Then he showed us how to do it right." Walkowiak reportedly quickly organized more volunteers and reduced the hour-long wait to just 15 minutes. The clinic gave the vaccine to the 1,000 people that day.
I loved this story because it was a helpful reminder that 1.) We all have superpowers. How am I using mine to solve the critical, vexing problems of the world? and 2.) There are heroes everywhere. I need to make sure I am noticing and appreciating them!
